Diseases of Attitude by Jim Rohn

Late 2022 I went back to listen to one of my favorite talks by Jim Rohn.

He speaks about the Diseases of Attitude that destroy your chances of ever doing well and why these diseases will cost you your future.

Here are 3 of the most important ones that have shifted the way I think and act:

  1. Indifference:Also known as the mild approach to life. You will know you have this disease when you constantly talk about how things never happen for you. Rohn says, “You can’t drift to the top of the mountain.” You have to work for your dreams & goals. You must ask yourself: am I proactive? Do I have a fire in my belly that pushes me to get up and do something? Am I waiting for opportunities to find me in my comfort zone?Change happens when we are inspired or when we are desperate. You have to be curious and excited to try things out. Whether they work out or not is another story. Either way, you will learn. Take control. Pick a direction and start moving. Course correct as you go.Follow your curiosities and fascinations. Live.
  2. Indecision:You can not sit on the fence forever. At some point you will have to make a decision. The funny thing is how we rationalize indecision by calling it "research". We spend weeks and months agonizing over one problem, gathering data, collecting advice from everyone, reading numerous articles and online reviews, countless hours spent on YouTube trying to find the perfect and right answer. We keep going back and forth, wrangling over the upsides and downsides of each minute detail. We are stuck, overthinking, living our lives in analysis paralysis. And I get it, there are a billion options, especially in this age. But, indecision is rooted in perfectionism. And the thing is, 'perfect' is not a human quality. Perfection is not meant to be attained. My good man, Voltaire, said, 'perfect is the enemy of good.' Read that again. Wrong decisions give you experience to make better decisions.Accept that you will make mistakes. Accept that you will learn more from your decisions than your indecisions. You have researched enough. Make the decision already.
  3. Over-Caution:Everything is a risk, from the moment you are born. Over-caution will only limit your chances of getting any rewards. Nobody is saying that you should cross the road without looking both sides. That's a stupid risk that will get you killed. What we are saying is that at some point you have to cross the road. And to minimize the chances of an accident, look both sides. That's called smart risk taking. You can't just jump into things without a bit of research and forethought. But after it is all said and done, you will have to take a risk at something that could potentially alter the course of your life.Having a heart to heart conversation with a loved is risky, you don't know how they will take it, and what will happen to your relationship. But is it a worthy risk? Of course. 100%. That's the price to pay for intimacy. Be cautious. But not over-cautious.Don't let timidity lock you out from the chance of a beautiful life.Be a smart risk taker.

There are 4 more Diseases of Attitude you should check out. Doubt. Worry. Pessimism. Complaining.????????????

Each one will help you look deeper into your current ways of being, and you will start to see just how prevalent these negative attitudes are. The people we hang out with, do business with and build our lives with carry these attitudes with them. Use your knowledge as a conversation starter and see how you can grow beyond these diseases.

Jim Rohn says that the key to the good life is to learn to put everything you've got into everything you do.

Because how you do anything, is how you do everything.

Which of these Diseases of Attitude are you working on today?
