Discussing situational awareness
I enjoyed being a guest on Stephanie Brown 's videocast on Thursday. The main topic was situational awareness, but we also discussed takt production, BIM, robotics, and AI.
Situational awareness is about allowing everybody in the construction project to have timely and relevant information that will enable them to plan, anticipate, and carry out their tasks successfully.
The challenge
In many cases, situational awareness is based on social interaction in meetings or observations during site walks. That's fine, but the picture they provide may not be comprehensive and constantly up-to-date.
The accuracy and frequency of data collection also depend on the workload of managers and workers. Under extensive pressure, taking notes meticulously may not be your first priority.
Automating with tech
AI-powered technologies that collect data incessantly from cameras, drones, and various sensors will improve our capabilities to reach real situational awareness. Technology can automate the process so that the dependence on manual input diminishes dramatically.
One thing that I emphasized in the discussion was personalization. Whatever the role and task of the person, the information they receive digitally should be tailored to their needs.
Privacy concerns
We also touched on the worker privacy question. A situationally aware system should always know the location and role of each worker on a construction site. Are we OK with that, and what kind of agreements are needed to dispel the privacy concerns of individuals?
