Discovery Stories of Mineral Deposits

Discovery Stories of Mineral Deposits

What special set of circumstances lead to the discovery of world-class ore deposits? Is it a combination of target selection, favourable political and geopolitical situation, exploration expenditure, teamwork, innovation, collaboration? The best way to learn about major discoveries is to read the stories from those who made them!!

I am compiling a list of great discovery stories. Some of these are recent publications and readily available while others may be out of print and no longer available. I welcome any contributions to the list.

One more I remembered being told about but never read. "Not on Queen Victoria's Birthday: The story of the Rio Tinto Mines" by David Avery. I recall being told the story of the title which came from a sign at the Seville railhead which read, "this train departs for the Rio Tinto mines every day at ..., but not on Her Majesty's birthday".?

A non-technical book is "Black Bonanza: A landslide of gold" by Peter Ryan. A mind-boggling read about the Mount Kare gold rush 1988-1990.
