Welcome to FPR Executive Coaching's April Newsletter. In this edition I will explore the topic of the 'discovery' or 'chemistry' call offered by Executive Coaches. We will explore what these calls are for and why they are such an important element in the coaching journey for both the coachee and coach.
- So what is a 'discovery' or 'chemistry' call? - Executive coaches usually offer a 30-45 minute, free, no obligation, call to assess 'coaching fit.' This is to figure out whether there is 'connection chemistry' between coach and coachee and to 'discover' answers to questions both may have about each other, and whether this partnership is the best to do the work in question together, to achieve the desired results. It is like a getting to know each other and planning meeting, all rolled into one.
- Style of coaching - There are so many different type of coaches out there in an industry, which isn't currently regulated. This discovery call is an opportunity to find out exactly what style of coaching is on offer and whether it is right for you. I offer an eclectic coaching approach, utilising elements from Gestalt; Solutions Focussed; CBC, Motivational Coaching, Time to Think, Creative and Somatic tools and other frameworks. The mix of tools used depends very much on the specific needs of the client in the session and I am trained to react to what comes up moment by moment in the sessions. This determines the approaches I use.
- Certification and Accreditation - I recommend we find out about the coach's qualifications, experience, membership and accreditation to Coaching Bodies. This gives reassurance on experience, standards and ethics too. You might want to ask to see testimonials from satisfied clients too. Does the coach feel equipped to work on your goals and confident they can support you to move forwards? If not, they may refer you on to someone better placed to support you. I am Henley Business School certified, one of the leading global schools for Executive Coaching. My certification is AC, ICF and EMCC accredited and am a member of the ICF and working to their ACC full accreditation.
- Likeability - is there chemistry between us and the coach? This is important. Is there genuine positive regard between us and can we envisage working together? This is just as important for the coach as for the coachee. If something doesn't intuitively feel right it probably isn't. Find a coach where there is trust, empathy and good rapport and you feel psychologically safe. This will make exploring complex topics easier and the work more successful.
- Contracting - this will follow the initial call, but there is the opportunity in the call to discuss length of sessions; format of sessions; frequency; duration; homework; structure; fees and all the logistical questions you may have. Get a feel for how this collaboration will look and what each side needs to make it a success.
- Shop around - the discovery/chemistry call is free of obligation so we can shop around and make sure we finally select the best coach to help us move forwards in a way which feels right for us. Ask all the questions we need to feel comfortable and excited about the work to come.
I hope this edition goes some way to demystify the 'discovery/chemistry' call and to also present it as a valuable opportunity to meet a few different coaches and confidently select the most appropriate fit for both. This will ensure the executive coaching experience is a successful one for all.
