Discovering True Ikigai in Japan: Highlights from the First Two Days of an Unforgettable Retreat

Discovering True Ikigai in Japan: Highlights from the First Two Days of an Unforgettable Retreat

In November 2023, I first encountered the concept of Ikigai—but, like many, through a Westernized and somewhat misunderstood interpretation. This sparked a curiosity that led me to Ikigai Tribe, founded by Nick Kemp, and set me on a path to uncover the true depth of Ikigai.

One year later, I found myself in Japan, immersed in an Ikigai retreat with a group of brilliant, curious minds from around the world. Led by Nick Kemp, we were joined by esteemed professors and thought leaders, all sharing a common passion for approaching life—both personal and professional—through the lens of Ikigai. While I initially planned to share my reflections post-retreat, the richness of my experiences compels me to share these highlights now.

Day One: Insights from Professor Akihiro Hasegawa

Our journey began with a memorable dinner where we met Professor Akihiro Hasegawa, who shared insights from his research on Ikigai. He explored the complex relationship between the “objects” or pursuits that bring us Ikigai and the experiences and emotions they invoke. Professor Hasegawa emphasized how our sense of Ikigai can connect us to the past, present, or future, with ourselves as the “agents” mediating this deeply personal process.

Day Two: Workshops at Alishan Park Café, Shibuya

Our second day unfolded with an incredible workshop featuring distinguished professors:

  • Dr. Ken Mogi discussed his recent research on “Ikigai Risks” in the context of AI’s impact. He examined how the replacement of some human crafts with AI technologies can threaten individuals’ Ikigai, affecting well-being and health at both individual and societal levels.

  • Professor Daki Kato introduced “Rolefulness,” a new psychological concept developed by him and Nick, focusing on the importance of social roles and connections for personal wellbeing. Rolefulness captures the continuous sense of satisfaction derived from fulfilling one’s roles, both socially and internally.

We also had the pleasure of meeting well-known Japanese figures who shared their unique Ikigai:

  • Makoto, an artist whose journey in art began just a year ago. For him, art is a medium to convey the hidden beauty of oceans and seas. When asked how he feels while creating, he said, “I feel alive—I feel like I’ve found what I’m looking for.”

  • Naoko Mikami, a master calligrapher, captivated us with her graceful brushwork on Washi paper. We even tried our hand at calligraphy, with a bit of a cheat—practice paper! As a keepsake, I received a stamp with my name in Japanese.

  • Oyama Kizen, a Shakuhachi (flute) player with over 20 years of experience, entranced us with his music, embodying his connection to ancestral heritage. Playing the Shakuhachi, he said, gives his life meaning and serves as a bridge to Japan’s rich cultural history.

  • Naoko Tomita, President of Willwind Inc., and Kouji Miki, Director of Kumano Sindo, introduced us to the Zen concept of “Waku Waku”—a process of self-discovery to uncover the Ikigai that exists within. This involves three steps: self-disclosure, specialized Zen meditation, and reflective dialogue. We experienced a 20-minute session, although the complete practice spans two days and includes a follow-up recharge session six months later.

I am eager to return home, Saudi Arabia, and share these profound insights, and, most importantly, explore collaborative research opportunities with professors to study Ikigai elements and their impact on professional wellbeing, burnout, and stress.

Stay tuned for more reflections, and thank you for being part of my journey!
