Discovering the Power of Purpose: A Journey with Essentialism
I was recommended the book?Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less ?by the wonderfully brilliant Leadership Psychologist and Executive Coach Dr. Lisa Walker , and it has since changed my life in the most profound way.
Written by Greg McKeown, Essentialism is a framework for simplifying one's life, cutting out the non-essentials, and focusing on what truly matters. And best of all, it's not just theory – McKeown provides easy-to-follow steps for putting Essentialism into action.
Prioritizing One's Goals
At the core of Essentialism is the idea of prioritization. McKeown encourages readers to identify their most important goals and then focus their time, energy, and resources on the activities that will help them achieve those goals. By focusing on what's essential, one will be able to get more done and achieve greater success. It is all about the discipline of elimination. McKeown offers practical tips and tricks to help one get started. I particularly appreciated reflecting on the "80/20 rule", which states that 20% of one's activities give one 80% of their results. This helped me stay focused on the truly essential things and eliminate the rest, as "clarity equals success."
Saying "No" to the Non-Essentials
One of the biggest opportunities of Essentialism is learning to say "no." McKeown identifies three types of activities: (1) urgent and important, (2) not urgent but important, and (3) neither urgent nor important. To be an effective Essentialist Leader, one has to be willing to say "no" to the non-essentials – the activities that are neither urgent nor important. This frees up time and energy to focus on what really matters.?

Taking Regular "Pauses"
In addition to saying "no," Essentialism is also about taking time to think, reflect, and plan. McKeown recommends taking regular "pauses" – whether it is a few minutes each day or a full day each week – to reflect on what one is doing and why one is doing it. This helps one stay focused and keep one's priorities in mind.
My Experience with Essentialism
I started my journey with Essentialism by making a list of my most important goals and then prioritizing my activities based on which would help me achieve those goals. I also started saying "no" to non-essential commitments that didn't align with my goals. And I made a point to take regular pauses to reflect on my progress and make any necessary adjustments.
The results have been wonderful additions to my life. I feel more focused, more productive, and more blissfully fulfilled. And by continuing to apply the principles of Essentialism, I will be able to achieve even more success in the future.?
So if you are ready to simplify your life, achieve more success, and unleash more potential, I recommend picking up a copy of?Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less.?And if you have already read it, I would love to hear about your experience in the comments below.
