Discovering the Northwoods: My First Fall Ride Through Wisconsin

There’s a bumper sticker that says: "If I have to explain it, you wouldn’t understand." When it comes to the Northwoods Fall Ride in Tomahawk, Wisconsin, I’m going to try my best to explain why it’s a must-do for any Harley-Davidson enthusiast.

This year, I had the opportunity to experience the legendary ride that attracts Harley riders from all over the country. Over the course of one unforgettable weekend, we traveled through Northern Wisconsin’s most scenic routes, making memories and discovering communities that truly embrace the Harley-Davidson culture.

Day 1: Riding to the Heart of the Northwoods

Our journey began at House of Harley-Davidson, with excitement in the air as we made our way towards Horicon. Along the way, we passed through small towns rich in history—Green Lake, originally known as the village of Dartford in 1847, and Stevens Point, home to the world’s largest trivia contest. Each town added its own unique charm to the trip, but the destination was clear: Tomahawk, the heart of the Northwoods.

A quick stop at Bull Falls Harley-Davidson in Wausau allowed us to catch up with old industry friends and take in Wisconsin’s stunning fall scenery. As the leaves changed colors, lining the roads with shades of gold and crimson, it was a reminder of the freedom that comes with riding a Harley.

Tomahawk is more than just a stop on the map. Its connection to Harley-Davidson runs deep, with the company purchasing a local boat factory in 1961 and transforming it into a plant that now manufactures key components for their touring bikes. This small town plays a big role in Harley’s operations and hosts the Northwoods Fall Ride—a tradition since the 1980s that celebrates both Harley-Davidson and the local community.

Day 2: Exploring the Northwoods and Its Hidden Gems

The next morning, we set out for a deeper exploration of Wisconsin’s Northwoods. Our first stop was Minocqua, a popular destination known for its scenic lakes and welcoming hospitality. Whether you’re stopping at a local gas station, grabbing a bite at a grill, or just passing through, the people here make bikers feel right at home.

From there, we rode to Boulder Junction, the “Musky Capital of the World,” where the wilderness closes in on the road, making for a peaceful, uninterrupted ride. The tall pines and quiet roads reminded me of the simplicity that comes with being on two wheels.

Our final stop for the day was St. Germain, where the vibrant fall colors and the town’s warm reception made it a highlight of the trip. The roads leading into town were lined with trees ablaze in autumn hues, and the atmosphere was pure Northwoods charm.

Day 3: The Road Home Through Wisconsin’s Best Kept Secrets

On the third day, we began the journey home, but not before stopping at Doc’s Harley-Davidson in Bonduel. Doc’s isn’t just a dealership—it’s an ode to vintage cars and motorcycles. From a 1971 Cuda Convertible to the world’s fastest Panhead, Doc’s collection is a must-see for any motor enthusiast.

After taking in the sights, we hit the road again, making our way through Green Bay (and celebrating the Packers’ win!) before reflecting on the weekend. Each mile on the ride home reminded me of how special the Northwoods Fall Ride truly is.

Why the Northwoods Fall Ride Should Be on Your Calendar

As we rode the final stretch back to Milwaukee, I realized why this event has become such a staple in the Harley-Davidson community. It’s not just about the ride—it’s about the people you meet, the towns you pass through, and the shared passion for Harley-Davidson. Every gas station, diner, and bar along the way welcomed us with open arms, and the scenic roads of Wisconsin’s Northwoods provided the perfect backdrop for a ride to remember.

If you’ve never experienced the Northwoods Fall Ride, I highly recommend adding it to your calendar for next year. You’ll leave with more than just memories—you’ll leave with a renewed sense of freedom and connection to the open road.

Final Thoughts

For those who love the thrill of a long ride and the camaraderie of the biker community, the Northwoods Fall Ride offers something truly special. It’s an experience that goes beyond the miles on the odometer, leaving you with a sense of connection to both the people and the places that make this event so unique.

If you’ve ever ridden through Wisconsin’s Northwoods or taken part in a similar event, I’d love to hear your stories. What’s your favorite ride or travel destination?

Let’s keep the conversation going.
