Discovering My ONE THING: A Journey of Focus and Progress in Business

Over the years I’d say there is ONE THING that has held me back more than anything else in business.

It’s been both a blessing and a curse.

A few days ago an old friend of mine messaged me. She had acquired a company through some tragic circumstances and things aren’t going as well as they should. She’s in a pivotal moment of her companies movement and didn’t know where to turn.

Because of our personal friendship and relationship, she asked me if I could help.

But after scheduling a call with me she said something that I’ve heard so many times before.

“I’m really looking forward to this, but I don’t really know exactly what you do, and I can’t make any mistakes in my business right now”.

I felt that deeply.

The ONE THING is clearly defining what I do and who I serve.

If I’m honest, I’ve done LOTS of things for LOTS of different kinds of companies through many niches.

I’ve managed million dollar ad accounts.

Built content plans and strategies that resulted in 10s of millions in revenue long term.

Helped run and lead Mastermind and coaching groups.

And invested a crapload of money into my own personal development.

I’ve gotten almost every ‘certification’ I could get. From Hubspot courses, to Digital Marketer, even getting a masters degree in Digital Marketing and starting a Theology degree.

That’s not to toot my own horn.

It’s almost a tragedy.

Because something a mentor said yesterday really struck a nerve.

I had told him, “Where I am right now doesn’t make sense, I’ve done the work”.

And he replied,

“You haven’t done the work, where is the fruit”?

My fruit is the PROOF, and it’s measured in dollars in my bank account.

And I’ve said so many times, “I’m tired of being the smartest broke person”.

It’s true. Despite everything I’ve been through, I’m still struggling in a lot of ways.

And if I had to nail down why.

It’s because I’ve been a chameleon.

I’ve figured out how to solve problems in almost any field for almost any person.

But have been unwilling to go all in in any one area.

And diluted focus gets you diluted results.

Sometimes I wish I were not as intelligent as I am.

Because I’ve noticed in business really dumb people can get way farther.

Because they are willing to do the same thing over and over and over again until it’s perfected.

And that’s what scales a business.

So that’s a super humbling thing for me.

Because the truth is, I am a dumb person.

I don’t know what I don’t know.

And the fruit isn’t there.

But the first step in advancing forward is admitting the truth about where you are now.

And it’s time I stop talking about what I’m going to do.

And just do the damn thing, so that I can show people what I did.

It’s been a fun journey so far.

And I’m still working on several cool projects. And having a ton of fun doing it.

Key takeaway?

If you’re struggling, find the ONE THING that you know you excel at, and find people who need that thing.

Time to take my own advice ;)
