Part 3. Finding Joy in the Little Things
The holiday season is a time of joy, love, and celebration. It’s a time when we come together with loved ones, exchange gifts, and create lasting memories. However, amidst the hustle and bustle, it’s easy to overlook the small moments that truly make this season magical and can also help you to cope and enjoy it the best that you can if this time of year is triggering or upsetting for you. The same can be said for many other times of year as well. But today we will focus on the Holiday season.
In this blog post, we will explore the importance of appreciating the little things that bring us joy. Through personal anecdotes and stories, we will delve into the beauty of finding happiness in simple pleasures. Additionally, we will suggest activities and practices that can help readers find joy in everyday moments. Allowing them to fully embrace the magic of the season.
Appreciating the Little Things
The holiday season is a time when society often places great emphasis on grand gestures and extravagant events. We are bombarded with images of lavish parties. Extravagant gifts. Over-the-top decorations. While these aspects certainly have their place in the holiday festivities; it’s important to remember that true joy can be found in the simplest of things.
I encourage you to appreciate finding joy in the little things during this season. This is a powerful reminder that happiness can be found in the everyday moments that often go unnoticed. It’s easy to get caught up in the whirlwind of holiday preparations and expectations. But by taking a step back and focusing on the small pleasures, you can cultivate a sense of gratitude and contentment.
Some Examples:
Imagine the warmth of a crackling fire on a cold winter’s night. The soft glow and comforting heat create an atmosphere of coziness and relaxation. It’s in these moments that we can truly appreciate the simple pleasure of warmth and find solace in the embrace of the season. And if you don’t have an actual fire? There are plenty of them to watch on YouTube mixed with a small heater and a cosy blanket!
The smell of freshly baked cookies or bread wafting through the house is another example of a small joy that can bring immense happiness. The aroma evokes memories of childhood. Family gatherings. The anticipation of indulging in a sweet treat. By taking a moment to inhale the scent and appreciate the effort that goes into baking, you can tap into the joy that comes from simple pleasures.
The twinkle of holiday lights is yet another small moment that can have a profound impact on our overall happiness. Whether it’s the glow of a single candle or the dazzling display of lights adorning a tree. The beauty and magic of these lights can transport us to a place of wonder and awe. By taking the time to truly observe and appreciate the twinkle, you can find joy in the enchantment of the season.
By appreciating these little things, we are reminded that happiness is not solely dependent on grand gestures or material possessions. It’s about finding joy in the present moment and being grateful for the small blessings that surround us. When we shift our focus from the external pressures of the holiday season to the simple pleasures that bring us joy, we can experience a profound shift in our overall well-being.
Finding Joy in Personal Anecdotes and Stories
Growing up in a lower-class background, my family didn’t have much during the holiday season. However, what we lacked in material possessions, we made up for with gratitude and a deep appreciation for the little things that brought us joy. This upbringing taught me the importance of keeping the magic of early childhood alive in my imagination.
I vividly remember the enchantment I felt as a child when I discovered the shapes created by the reflections and refractions of light on walls, windows, or the ground. It was like a dance of colours and patterns that sparked my imagination and filled me with wonder. In those moments, I learned that even the simplest play of light could bring immense joy and ignite my creativity.
Christmas markets were another source of delight for me. The bustling atmosphere. The tantalising smells of roasted chestnuts and mulled wine. The vibrant decorations… All contributed to a sense of magic and excitement. I would wander through the stalls, taking in the sights and sounds, marvelling at the intricate ornaments and the joyous laughter of people enjoying themselves. These experiences taught me that joy could be found in the shared moments of celebration and connection.
Winter brought its own unique pleasures, especially when the cold weather transformed pathways and playgrounds into frozen wonderlands. I would glide across the ice in my shoes, feeling a sense of freedom and exhilaration. The simplicity of this activity, combined with the beauty of the winter landscape, filled me with a profound sense of joy and gratitude.
Snow!
One of the highlights of the winter season was the rare occurrence of snowfall. Living in an area where snow was scarce, I cherished every flake that fell from the sky. With the meagre amount of snow that accumulated, I would gather it up and meticulously build the biggest snowman I could manage. Despite the limited resources, the process of creating something out of nothing brought me immense satisfaction and a deep appreciation for the power of imagination.
Through these experiences, I learned that finding joy and meaning in even the smallest things can have a profound impact on our overall happiness. It’s not about the grand gestures or the abundance of material possessions. It’s about cultivating a mindset of gratitude and seeking out the beauty in every situation.
I have carried this perspective with me throughout my life. It has seen me finding joy in both the good and the bad. By focusing on the positive aspects of any situation, no matter how small, I have discovered that the good is multiplied. It’s a mindset that enables me to appreciate the simple pleasures. Find silver linings in challenging times. To embrace the beauty of everyday moments.
And you can cultivate it to. Start small and watch as your ability grows!
Mindful Walks
In the midst of and chaos and busyness, finding joy in everyday moments becomes even more crucial. One powerful way to achieve this is through the practice of mindful walks. Taking a break from the hustle and bustle and immersing yourself in the beauty of nature can provide a much-needed respite and an opportunity to reconnect with yourself and the world around you.
Exploring local parks or scenic trails is a wonderful way to step outside and embrace the natural wonders that surround us. Nature has a way of captivating our senses and grounding us in the present moment. Notice the sights, sounds, and smells that envelop you during your walks. The vibrant colours of autumn leaves. The gentle rustling of branches. Chirping of birds. The scent of pine trees. They can all contribute to a sense of tranquillity and joy.
Being fully present during these walks is vital. Let go of distractions and worries. Put the phone on silent in your pocket. Allow yourself to be fully immersed in the experience. By focusing on the present moment, you can let go of past regrets or future anxieties. And instead find solace and joy in the simplicity of a peaceful walk.
How To Be Present
Engage all your senses during these mindful walks. Feel the earth beneath your feet. Notice the cool breeze on your skin. Listen to the rhythmic sound of your own breath. By tuning into your senses, you can heighten your awareness and deepen your connection with the natural world. This heightened state of awareness can lead to a greater appreciation for the beauty that surrounds us. Even in the smallest details.
Additionally, engage your sense of curiosity during these walks. Explore new paths. Notice the intricate patterns in tree bark. Observe the delicate movements of wildlife. By approaching your walks with a sense of wonder and curiosity, you can discover hidden treasures and find joy in the unexpected.
Mindful walks offer a sanctuary from the noise and demands of everyday life. They provide an opportunity for you to slow down. To reconnect with yourself. To find solace in the simplicity of the present moment. By embracing the beauty of nature, to be fully present, and to engage your senses and curiosity, you can find joy in the everyday moments that often go unnoticed.

Finding Joy in a Cup of Hot Chocolate
The holiday season is a time of indulgence, and amidst the hustle and bustle, finding joy in everyday moments becomes even more important. Another delightful way to embrace the magic of the season and find joy is by savouring a cup of hot chocolate. Why not take a break from your busy schedules, set aside a few moments for yourself. Prepare a warm mug of chocolate of an evening to truly indulge in the experience.
Hot chocolate can come in many many different flavours, and be prepared in lots of different ways. But whichever flavour and technique you use, slow down and appreciate the process of making it. Start by choosing your favourite chocolate mix or experiment with homemade recipes. If you are unsure where to start, think about your favourite chocolate bar and the flavours involved there. As you gather the ingredients and prepare the drink, you can take pleasure in the anticipation of the rich, velvety treat that awaits you.
My personal favourite is as follows:
And when I need a quick version? Cadbury’s hot chocolate powder with Hazelnut milk!
How To Find The Joy
Once your drink is ready, find a cozy spot where you can fully immerse yourself in the experience. Whether it’s a comfortable armchair by the fireplace or a peaceful corner of your home. Creating a serene environment can enhance the joy of the moment.
Engage your senses as your savour each sip. The aroma of the drink, with its hints of chocolate and warmth, can evoke a sense of comfort and nostalgia. Close your eyes and inhale deeply. Allowing the scent to envelop you. By paying attention to the rich aroma, you can fully appreciate the sensory experience that is coming your way.
As you take your first sip, notice the velvety texture of the drink as it glides across your tongue. The smoothness and richness of the drink can bring a sense of indulgence and pleasure. Let the drink linger in your mouth, allowing the flavours to unfold and the warmth to spread before swallowing. By being fully present in this moment, you can find joy in the simple pleasure of indulging your senses.
In addition to the taste and texture, the comforting warmth of the cocoa can provide a sense of coziness and relaxation. Cradle the mug in your hands, feeling the gentle heat radiating through your fingers. This act of embracing the warmth can create a sense of comfort and well-being, allowing you to find solace in the present moment.
By slowing down and truly savouring each sip of hot chocolate, you can find joy in the present moment. Let go of your worries and immerse yourself in the simple pleasure of indulging your senses.
In a world that often values productivity and constant activity, taking the time to appreciate small moments of indulgence can be a transformative experience.
Spending Quality Time with Loved Ones
During the holiday rush, it’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of shopping, decorating, and planning. However, it’s crucial to remember that the true essence of the season lies in the precious moments spent with loved ones. By prioritising quality time together, we can create lasting memories and strengthen our bonds. This can be with family, friends, or acquaintances either at work or in your community.
One wonderful way to foster togetherness is by engaging in activities that everyone can enjoy. Baking cookies together, for example, not only fills the house with delicious aromas but also provides an opportunity for laughter, teamwork, and creativity. From mixing the ingredients to decorating the cookies. This activity encourages collaboration and brings out the inner child in all of us.
Another idea is to gather around the table and play board games. This classic pastime not only brings out friendly competition but also encourages communication, problem-solving, and shared laughter. Whether it’s a strategic game of chess or a lively round of charades. The joy of playing together creates a sense of unity and strengthens the bonds between family and friends.
Sometimes, the simplest activities can have the most profound impact. Taking the time to have heartfelt conversations with loved ones can be incredibly meaningful. Sharing stories, expressing gratitude, and reminiscing about cherished memories can deepen our connections and remind us of the love and support that surrounds us.
By focusing on the people who matter most, we can find joy in the love and connection that the holiday season brings.
So, amidst the holiday rush, let’s remember to slow down, embrace the present moment, and create meaningful connections with our loved ones.
Together, we can make this holiday season truly special and unforgettable.
