Discovering and Executing on my "Why"

Discovering and Executing on my "Why"

I have just completed 3 mammoth days of training and development to earn my “wings” as a Professional EOS Implementer. I am sitting in the airport lounge awaiting my flight home from Sydney, with a head full of thoughts, pages of notes, a heart that’s excited about the future, and new friends to join me on the next phase of my life’s journey.

Dial back 4 months and this wasn’t on my radar - I’m still happily running Calvert Technologies (my IT services business) and teaching people to fly via Rotor-Sport Australia - this is just another string in my bow.

Some years back, whilst wrestling through one of my several dark periods running a business, I stopped to work out what my “why” is - what my life’s purpose is, and the legacy I want to leave behind when I finally enter the pearly gates. Truth be told, it didn’t take me long to articulate it, as it was something I’d already been doing subconsciously - my passion and life’s mission is to grow people, enabling and equipping them to achieve their greatest potential. My legacy is to depart this world having made a positive impact such that it’s at least a little better than how it was when I entered it (regardless of whether I am remembered, or not).

I have had the joy and privilege to pursue this passion through multiple opportunities:

  • Staff, customers, and vendors I have met through running Calvert Technologies for more than 28 years
  • Mentoring and coaching many young people through my church life, and the school attended by my daughter
  • Numerous community initiatives and events for which I have been both starter, facilitator, and active participant

I look back over the past 30-or-so years and I have humble pride at the positive impact I’ve been able to have on people’s lives, the businesses in which they work, the communities I live and work in, families, friends, colleagues and more. I have certainly messed up more times than I care to remember, but I know there have been more highs than lows.

My IT business has impacted hundreds of organisations, and thousands of people, over the past 28+ years and I count it a true privilege to have been able to work with leadership teams on so much more than just technology - like me many of these business leaders simply fell into their roles and have been going through similar tough lessons to those I have endured. The fact they have trusted me to share their battles, and given me opportunity to be a safe place for them, and provide some glimmer of hope, or share a “nugget of wisdom” I have picked up from my own mistakes or learnings from others (I am certainly no business genius with all the answers!) is such a blessing to me.

At a recent EOS Worldwide event in Sydney (#stronginsix), multiple people I’ve known for some years who also attended suggested I’d make a good EOS implementer, which is something I’d never considered. We have used EOS as the operating system for our business since 2017 and have experienced the incredible impact it can have on a business and its people - the clarity of vision, the surety of having the right people in our business, the crystallisation of the numbers to keep an eye on, the ability to identify and solve our issues, the predictability of the right processes, and ultimately the traction to get things done, as been truly transformational. I spoke to my good mate Dan Williams , who was our EOS Implementer for around 6 years, about this and his eyes lit up - he’d known this for a while but had patiently waited until I woke up to it (yes - I an sometimes be a little slow on the up take!).

Fast forward to this week - I survived “EOS Bootcamp” on Tuesday and Wednesday (thanks Dan Williams and Anthony Wood ), then our Quarterly Community Exchange today. I haven’t had much sleep, and what sleep I did get was broken as my brain was continuously processing all that I’d learned, and all that I need to learn and master. Thanks too to my fellow bootcampers Reyan Fernando and Colin Cuthbert , and added thanks to Roger Vertannes for his incredible wisdom and insight.

But I feel ready, and excited about the future.

I’m not leaving IT - I love the work the Calvert Technologies team does with our customers and truly cherish the opportunity to help them prosper.? It’s a great vehicle for me to continue to fulfil my passion and life’s mission.

I’m certainly not leaving aviation - the fact I get to help make people’s dreams come true by teaching them to be safe aviators is something I still have to pinch myself about. I had dreamed of being a pilot since the age of 7 or 8, and it took too long to become a reality, but now it is a joy I struggle to put words to. I did have privilege of taking Dan Williams for a flight (is that like crossing the streams??) and he still lights up when he tells people about his experience and seeing the joy I feel.

But this is a new opportunity for me to work with companies, business owners, and leadership teams, to help them clarify their “why” and help them realise it. I have a BIG few years ahead, but I’m both excited and energised to get out there and continue to live my “why” and ultimately leave this world at least a little better than how it was when I entered it. And I get to continue to work alongside Dan (yes - the streams are most definitely crossed!).

If you don’t know what EOS is, or have heard about it and want to learn more, let’s have a chat. (Same goes if you’ve ever wanted to be a pilot ??) I promise not to “sell” you on it, but simply to share how it has transformed my IT business, and the live’s of the people within it, and how it just might be the positive change you’re looking for.

What do I do as an EOS Implementer? I help people get what they want from their entrepreneurial business.

I am proud to be an #EOSImplementer
