Have you ever wondered why humans are so compelled to categorise and label everything around them? We name flowers, trees, and rivers, giving form and structure to the world to feel a sense of order and security. This tendency to define and make sense of things is a hallmark of human nature. But as helpful as this can be, it can also trap us in a conceptual reality, blurring our understanding of ultimate truths.
Let’s explore this idea and how embracing both conceptual and ultimate realities can lead us toward deeper clarity and peace.
Conceptual Reality: The Shadow of the Self
Think of yourself standing in sunlight. Your body casts a shadow. That shadow, much like conceptual reality, is tied to you—dependent on your movements and existence. Yet, no matter how hard you try, you cannot “clean” or alter the shadow itself. Scrubbing it won’t remove it, and striking it won’t change it. The shadow isn’t independent; it’s merely a projection of something greater.
Similarly, our conceptual reality consists of labels and ideas we impose to navigate life: good and bad, male and female, roles, and identities. These constructs serve their purpose, helping us respect societal norms and interact with others. Yet, they are not the ultimate truth. They are merely reflections, much like the shadow cast by the self.
Ultimate Reality: Beyond Definitions
Ultimate reality, in contrast, is the unchanging essence beneath all forms and labels. It is the truth of existence that transcends our human-made boundaries. Imagine looking deeply at the atomic structure of everything around you. From the chair you sit on to the molecules of your body, everything is energy—infinitely small, interconnected, and constantly changing.
Even science confirms this: when we break matter down to its core, we find emptiness. Yet, this emptiness is also everything—it holds the potential for all forms of life. Just like yin exists within yang and yang within yin, ultimate reality reveals that opposites are inseparable and necessary for balance.
The River That Flows: Life’s Ever-Changing Nature
Consider pointing to a river, perhaps the Nile or the Amazon, and proclaiming, “This is the river.” By the time you speak, the water you point to has already flowed away. Similarly, life is in a constant state of flux—your body, mind, and experiences are always changing.
A philosopher once said, “No man ever steps in the same river twice, for it’s not the same river, and he’s not the same man.” This profound truth reminds us that clinging to fixed definitions—of ourselves or the world—will only limit our understanding of life’s infinite possibilities.

Finding Unity: The Ocean and the Grain of Salt
Imagine a grain of salt sitting beside the ocean. Though small and seemingly separate, it is made of the same essence as the vast sea. When tossed into the water, the grain dissolves, becoming one with the ocean.
This metaphor illustrates the journey of dissolving ego and separation. By letting go of rigid self-identifications, we can merge into the greater unity of existence. However, this process is gradual. Life unfolds in stages, much like a river winding its way to the sea.

How can we apply these insights to everyday life?
Conclusion: Becoming the Ocean
In the grand tapestry of life, we are both the grain of salt and the vast ocean. By balancing the conceptual and ultimate realities, we can live with clarity, compassion, and a deep sense of interconnectedness.
