Relocating our family to Canada for six months was a bold adventure—and like any adventure, it came with a mix of excitement and nerves. My kids, ages 7 to 12, were facing new schools in a new country, and their biggest worry was: Will I make friends? We talked through their ideas for making new connections, eventually coming back to a simple yet timeless piece of advice: just be yourself.
Embracing Authenticity: A Personal and Business Lesson
I realized during these conversations that the advice I gave my kids is the same wisdom I share with business owners: figure out who you are, and then commit to that identity. In a world that constantly urges us to fit in, this can be difficult, but it's essential for standing out and building lasting relationships, both in life and business.
When businesses try to be everything to everyone, they often end up reaching no one. The concept of authenticity is foundational to what I call a "Market Dominating Position"—a clear identity that allows businesses to truly resonate with the right audience. Rather than casting a wide net, authenticity attracts people who connect with your values and your story. In my experience as a coach, this strategy drives more meaningful and sustainable growth than any quick sales tactics ever could.
Authenticity as a Growth Strategy
To any business owner reading this, consider your own brand: Are you presenting yourself authentically, or are you caught in the trap of trying to please everyone? Authenticity in business isn’t just about the image; it’s about the core values and mission that guide every decision and action.
Who you are determines your path. Authenticity aligns your vision with real actions, creating a business that feels genuine and memorable. It’s what separates thriving companies from those struggling to maintain relevance. As one anonymous but wise person once said, "The easiest thing in the world to be is ourselves. Unfortunately, one of the longest journeys you will ever take is to figure out who that is."
