I’m elated to share a valuable takeaway from Discover Your Destiny by the great public speaker, mentor, and humanitarian Robin Sharma—one of my favorite authors. Reading has played a significant role in my life, and this book left a lasting impression.
The concept of the Four Plateaus of Learning a Skill transformed my approach to mastering anything. Here’s a breakdown:
Plateau 1: Unconsciously Incompetent At this stage, I didn’t know what I didn’t know. Initially, I didn’t understand why public speaking was crucial or how it connected to my personal growth. But my curiosity led me to explore further.
Plateau 2: Conscious Incompetence Here, I realized public speaking was my unique talent, a natural gift. From a young age, I loved participating in speech competitions and actively sought ways to improve. That’s when I found Toastmasters, which helped me refine my skills.
Plateau 3: Conscious Competence This stage requires action. Consistency is key to progress. The Bhagavad Gita wisely teaches us to perform our duties without attachment to results. Success comes through persistence, even when facing failure. Staying on track is crucial here.
Plateau 4: Unconscious Competence At this stage, true mastery is achieved. If we focus on stage three with attention and persistence, we’ll reach our highest potential. The rewards may seem distant, but by following the process diligently, success becomes inevitable.
This journey reshaped my approach to learning, especially in public speaking. Mastery doesn’t happen overnight, but with dedication and consistency, the results will speak for themselves.
