Discover Your Passion in Retirement

Living a passionate life may be the ultimate achievement. People make their way through life and into retirement in various ways. But it's the time, experience, and wisdom that they've accumulated along the way that often points them towards a new passion, or intensifies an existing one.

Pursuing one's passion in retirement can help resolve both personal and financial issues common to both new and longer-term retirees, including replacing one's work identity, staying socially connected, keeping mentally & physically fit, and remaining financially secure. It can give retirees a reason to be thankful every night and wake up smiling every morning.

The concept of 'retiring to a passion' can be vital because, too often, retirement is wrongly portrayed as a utopian period during which people are happy and content to do little or nothing with their time. This error in thinking presupposes that the things you do in the lead up to retirement will be enough to keep you happy for the rest of your life. Many retirees are surprised to learn that it requires constant working at relationships, time management, and taking action to generate positive feelings.

No matter what stage of life, our actions and behaviours generally dictate how we feel. Feelings alone aren't always reliable or positive, and they invariably alter our moods, relationships, and goals. Those who don't 'retire to something' can find themselves confused during their retirement transition as they begin to sort the differences between what they thought retirement would be and what it really is.

That makes it more important than ever for retirees to have a structured process for discovering their passion and what they truly want to do in retirement.
