Discover Vienna Without Barriers

Vienna is taking significant steps towards inclusivity, with a focus on accessibility in mobility, art, and culture. Known for its rich cultural heritage, the city is also committed to making its public spaces and offerings more accessible to all, residents and visitors alike. To highlight this, the Vienna Tourist Board has launched an innovative video series on Instagram that showcases the city from an inclusive perspective.

A Fresh Look at Vienna: Through the Eyes of a Wheelchair User

The first episode of this new video initiative features Nico Langmann, one of Austria’s top wheelchair tennis players. Despite facing the challenge of paralysis from a young age, Nico has built an impressive sports career, including winning the Austrian National Championship in July 2024. In the video, Nico takes viewers on a tour of Vienna, highlighting the city’s accessibility and inclusive offerings.

From art museums like Albertina modern, with its accessible platforms and elevators, to restaurants like Neni am Prater, Nico showcases how Vienna caters to visitors with mobility challenges. The video series is not only aimed at people with disabilities but also seeks to raise awareness about the importance of accessibility in urban environments.

A Commitment to Accessibility: Vienna's Public Transport

Vienna’s commitment to accessibility extends beyond cultural venues. The Vienna public transport system, Wiener Linien, has been consistently improving its infrastructure to ensure barrier-free access. All metro stations and most tram and bus stops are fully accessible, with ramps, elevators, and automatic boarding ramps on new trains. This allows everyone, from wheelchair users to parents with strollers, to navigate the city with ease.

Accessible Art and Culture

Vienna’s museums are leading the way in creating accessible art experiences. Many institutions now offer services for people with disabilities, including tactile exhibits, guided tours in sign language, and audio guides for the visually impaired. For example:

  • The Kunsthistorisches Museum offers inclusive tours, with tactile 3D versions of famous paintings for visually impaired visitors.
  • Sch?nbrunn Palace provides video guides in sign language and special tours for blind and visually impaired guests.
  • The Belvedere and Albertina are also pioneers in providing services that make art accessible to everyone.

Inclusive Meetings in Vienna

Vienna is also setting new standards for inclusive meetings and events. The city offers venues that cater to people with disabilities, including fully accessible meeting rooms and event spaces. At venues like Hofburg Vienna and Messe Wien Exhibition & Congress Center, accessibility features such as tactile guidance systems, wheelchair-friendly layouts, and sign language translation options ensure that all participants can engage fully.

Child-Friendly Meetings

In a move to make events more family-friendly, venues like Austria Center Vienna offer childcare services during congresses. This enables parents to participate in meetings without worrying about childcare arrangements.

Vienna’s Inclusive Future

With the launch of this video initiative, the Vienna Tourist Board aims to showcase Vienna as an inclusive, welcoming city for all. As part of a broader effort, the city continues to enhance its infrastructure and cultural offerings to ensure that Vienna remains a destination where everyone can experience art, culture, and community – without barriers.
