Or perhaps he told you to "spend every dime that you got, cuz you never know if you're gonna live this whole life or not." While your grandfather may have meant well, these pieces of advice may not necessarily translate into the real world.

When it comes to launching a new career or growing an existing business, relying on years of experience may not be enough. Here are some examples:

• A banker who wants to become a consultant may say, "I'm just relying on my years of experience." But what experience? You need to be able to translate experience into skills, and being a "people person" is not enough. You need to be willing to build career capital to create the skills necessary to succeed.
• An existing business owner who has been open for 10 years and has a handful of employees may say, "This is the way we've done it up to this point, and we're still here, so we must be doing something right." But relying on experience alone may cause your business to stagnate. You need to continue to build new skills and not rely on the same networking events or onboarding processes.

Therefore, it's essential to learn new skills regularly, read or listen to books to expand your knowledge and join a coaching group where you can learn from others and expand your expertise.
