Day 1 or Day 90? It Doesn't matter. Your impact does.
Your first 90 days can make or break your new job experience.
Curious about the game changer? Walk this journey with me.
It is essential to prioritize your responsibilities in your role. Focus on the highest priorities, which are likely to be your job's core responsibilities.
To do this, ask your manager about the immediate priorities for the next 30-90 days. Keep your focus on these priorities.
Meeting with your teammates and stakeholders to find out how you can support their roles in achieving their priorities is also helpful. Keep a journal of your accomplishments. Remember, this is a 90-day probation period.
Navigating the first 90 days at a new job is about making a good impression and laying a foundation for lasting success.
Here are ten unconventional steps that go beyond the basics:
1. Become a Storyteller - Every piece of data and project tells a story. Learn to narrate these tales compellingly, and you would become indispensable.
Storytelling has been a powerful tool for a long time to bring about change. It involves the art and science of creating connections between people. Storytelling can also be an effective learning tool. The power of stories lies in their ability to connect us to the storyteller, characters, and heart. By immersing ourselves in a captivating tale, we are transported to a world beyond our own and given a glimpse into the human experience. So, let us embrace the magic of storytelling and allow ourselves to be moved, inspired, and transformed by the stories we encounter.
2. Master the Art of Listening - Truly listen, not just wait for your turn to speak. Insights and opportunities often lie in the pauses between conversations. We have two ears and only one mouth for a good reason.
Listening is a valuable skill sometimes taught as a specific skill outside of therapist training. Mastering the art of listening will put you in great shape to succeed in your first 90 days at work.
3. Cultivate Curiosity - Ask questions no one else asks. Dive deep into the 'why' behind your role and your team's objectives.
Curiosity is the fundamental aspect of all creativity. It drives individuals to experiment, tinker, create, and strive to improve. Regardless of your position in a team, be it a Chief Marketing Officer or the most junior member, having curiosity is crucial to thrive; otherwise, you risk going on autopilot.
Curiosity is a strong desire to know or learn something. It is essential for any professional because it helps improve their skills and enables them to identify and solve problems.
With curiosity, individuals can perform tasks and activities in the same way repeatedly, resulting in a lack of innovation and progress and ultimately inhibiting growth.
4. Embrace the 'Outsider' Perspective - Use your fresh eyes to identify gaps and opportunities that others who had been in the company's culture for long time, might miss.
Innovation is often driven by individuals who are not part of the established group or organization and are willing to question and challenge the existing practices and beliefs.
Various research studies have shown that outsiders, who are not bound by the norms and standards of insiders, tend to identify novel solutions and opportunities that incumbents often overlook. It is important to recognize the value of the outsider perspective and embrace it as an advantage rather than a disadvantage.

5. Build a 'Personal Board of Directors' - Seek mentors and advisors within the organization. Diverse perspectives can guide you through complex challenges.
Surround yourself with people who are already in the place you want to be.
Mentors are precious for those seeking guidance in their careers. They can offer specific insights and information that can help mentees succeed. For example, you want to master the business model of your organization. How does your company make money? Get help from your mentor to build your business acumen.
Mentors can help you master performing particular tasks or developing valuable skills. Such guidance can be particularly beneficial for those just starting a new job, as it can help them feel more comfortable in their role more quickly.
6. Navigate the Culture, Not Just the Job - Understanding unwritten rules can be as crucial as mastering your job description.
It is very important to ensure you can fit within the organization's culture because if you don't, this may not be the right place for you.
7. Champion Your Team's and Others' Success—Amplify others' ideas and contributions. Success is a team sport.
Clap for your teammates success and thank them for their efforts!
Celebrate the success of your boss and colleagues. Celebrate the diverse contributions each team member brings. Without constant comparison, creativity thrives, leading to impactful company contributions.
8. Find the Pain Points and Challenges - Identify the most significant headaches your team faces and address them. Be the problem-solver.
Document any issues you see that need attention and try solving them as soon as possible based on your priorities.
9. Document Your Learnings - Keep a journal of insights, mistakes, and victories. It's your playbook for growth. Remember to highlight your accomplishments.
10. Reflect on Your 'WHY' and The Company's "WHY" - Regularly remind yourself why you took this job. Aligning with your purpose fuels motivation and resilience.
“People don't buy what you do; they buy why you do it.” - Simon Sinek
Early identification of your "Why" aligns wit your organization's why and sets you up for success within 90 days of employment..
