OUR STORY

According to the original historical documents displayed at Hawksmoor House, the land was granted in 1692 by Simon van der Stel, an early Cape governor who founded the settlement of Stellenbosch. However, archival research reveals a recorded date of 28 June 1701, signed by Willem Adriaan van der Stel. The farm Waarburg, named after Wartburg Castle in Germany, belonged initially to Reverend Hercules van Loon, who was appointed due to familial ties rather than suitability.

Following Van Loon's death, the land passed to his widow, marking the beginning of a succession of owners spanning 310 years, totaling 25 individuals. Notably, in 1812, the farm briefly belonged to Pieter Retief, a prominent figure in South African history as the respected leader of the Voortrekkers. Tragically, Retief was later murdered by the Zulu leader Dingaan.

The present owners, Mark Borrie and Simon Olding, who acquired the farm in 2004, named it Hawksmoor House on Matjieskuil Farm. The name Matjeskuil (the Afrikaans version now being Matjieskuil) first appeared in 1826.

Over the centuries, the property has diversified its produce, transitioning from tobacco and sheep to its current offerings of oats, hay, luzerne, butternut squash, and green beans. Additionally, approximately 90 red Angus cattle roam the farm. With 28 hectares dedicated to grape cultivation, some vines dating back 29 years, Matjieskuil exclusively produces grapes for the acclaimed 'Hawksmoor at Matjieskuil' label. This label boasts a selection of award-winning wines, notably Chenin, Pinotage, Mourvèdre, Shiraz, and Cabernet Franc.
