Where is Guanajuato ?
Things to know about Guanajuato
Located in central Mexico, Guanajuato, the very capital of the state of Guanajuato, is unlike any other place in the world. With its almost 200,000 inhabitants and 2000 meters of altitude, it has been a Unesco World Heritage Site since 1988 for its incomparable beauty and extremely rich history. ??
The real particularity of the city lies in its soils. Indeed, as a former mining city, the soils are a real gruyère. Dozens of streets are actually underground in the "subterranea", making motor vehicles extremely discreet, or even non-existent in large areas of the city. Not to mention the "Boca del Infierno", an impressive mine shaft that plunges 600m underground ?

The Spaniards became very interested in the area when they discovered that the area was rich in gold and silver mines. They decided to found a town in these hostile lands in order to start mining. To enjoy a panoramic view of the colourful facades of Guanajuato, a funicular will take you to the square of the monumento al Pipila! On this square, a gigantic statue in memory of Juan José de los Reyes Martínez Amaro, a former miner and hero of the Mexican War of Independence. The story goes that through an act of extreme bravery, he managed to burn down the gate of Fort Alhondiga (Guanajuato's fortress and prison) and allowed the conquest of the city by the revolutionaries. ?
The view from this square is impressive. The cathedral, the Juarez theatre, the small animated gardens, the university, the large Hidalgo market or the Basilica of Our Lady of Guanajuato can be distinguished. ??
This Basilica is recognizable by its yellow facade and its baroque architecture. It is located in the heart of the city centre. But in a completely different style, don't miss walking around the city's University, built on the ruins of a hospice in a neoclassical style in the 1950s. ????
