Discover Leadership That Feels Like Home

Discover Leadership That Feels Like Home

Welcome back, Cultivate Leadership Community,

This week, I want to introduce someone who feels close to home in more ways than one—someone I think many of you will recognize: Daniel.

Daniel's story has a special place in my heart because Daniel is me, the “earlier me.” Years ago, when I first started this journey, I wrote Daniel’s story as a reminder of who I wanted to help and why. Now, nearly six years later, I share Daniel’s story with you all because there are so many people out there just like him, just like my younger self, navigating the same questions, struggles, and dreams.

Daniel is a 34-year-old dad and Marine Corps veteran who wanted more for his life. He stepped out of uniform, got a job, started a family, but still felt something was missing. He’d lay awake at night wondering how he’d truly provide for his family, how he’d become the dad he wanted to be, how he’d show up as the husband his wife needed, and how he’d build the certainty they both craved.

Daniel looks at his kids and wonders what kind of life he’s creating for them.

He’s seeking a deep connection with his wife and kids. He keeps so much bottled up because he was taught that’s the “right” thing to do. He has conversations in his head that always end with him feeling broken, worthless, and questioning if this is really all life has to offer.

He’s looking for that one thing that will change his life in a radical way. He has big dreams, ambitious goals, and a heart as wide as the ocean.

One day, he hears a podcast that says, “Dads coming home,” and he realizes he’s been on autopilot for so much of his life. He tells himself, “Today will be the day.” He takes the first step, beginning a journey of discovery, growth, and a vulnerability he’s never known.

Practical Tips: How to Take the First Step Toward the “Real You”

Daniel’s journey is a reminder that real change begins with a single, conscious choice. Here are a few small but powerful steps you can take to start uncovering the real you:

  1. Create Space for Reflection Take a few minutes each day to reflect on what truly matters to you. Maybe it’s time with family, your own growth, or redefining success on your own terms.
  2. Embrace One Vulnerable Conversation Try opening up with someone in your life—a partner, friend, or even yourself through journaling. Sharing openly about your dreams and challenges helps to foster connection and self-trust.
  3. Listen for a Prompt Much like Daniel’s podcast moment, keep an ear out for something that resonates. That nudge could come from a book, a podcast, or a conversation and may be the spark you need to say, “Today will be the day.”

Self-Reflection Questions

Consider these questions as you continue on your personal growth journey:

  • When I think about my family and the future I want to create, what do I see?
  • What old stories am I carrying that no longer serve who I want to be?
  • Where in my life have I been on “autopilot,” and how can I take back the controls?

Sharing Our Stories

This week, I’d love to hear from those of you who may have a “Daniel” in your life—a former version of yourself, a loved one, or someone you know who has struggled but also found hope and growth. By sharing our stories, we lift each other up and remind one another that we’re not alone on this path.

Final Thoughts

Daniel’s journey is one many of us know well, even if the details differ. His story reflects the truth that life’s challenges and doubts are stepping stones to becoming the person we’re meant to be. It’s the real you that the world needs, and it’s the real you that will create lasting impact in the lives of those around you. By taking that first step toward uncovering your own authentic self, you build a foundation of trust, resilience, and strength that others can lean on and learn from.

Let’s make today the day we begin that journey, even if it’s just a small step.

My promise in everything I do is to always be the coach I wish I had in my life ten years ago.

Great perspective! Having those vulnerable conversations has been so big for me. In the toughest times of life, I tend to bottle things up. When shine a light on your own darkness, it has a way of healing things up.
