DISCOVER THE HOMO FABER EVENT AND EXPERIENCE, VENICE 2022

Venice is living its new resilient era, and has long been the forefront of the contemporary evolution of the arts. It is one of the excellent homes of creative visions in Italy, and the perfect destination for events that embrace the town and its tradition, transforming it in a beating heart of activities and new cultural experiences.

THE HOMO FABER EXPERIENCE

This spring, The Homo Faber Experience takes place concurrently with the Homo Faber Event, to which it is complementary, and offers the opportunity to deep dive in the creative delights of the capital of excellent craftsmanship.?

The Homo Faber Experience presents tours where visitors can e.g. investigate the behind-the-scenes of the famous La Fenice opera house, to see a team of skilled master craftsmen in action, including decorative painters and wood craftsmen, who create extraordinary sets for the theatre.

Another absolute must that can be checked through the Homo Faber Experience, is the Orsoni furnace: the last one still operative in Venice, this furnace produces hand-cut artisanal mosaics. Visitors can enjoy the infinite shades on display in the color library and marvel at every creative gesture needed to create the glazes.

For everyone with a sweet tooth, there is the opportunity to admire how the confectioners of Pasticceria Dal Nono Colussi create the best amaretti, baicoli, and the typical Venetian fugassa using only natural ingredients, just as they did three generations ago.

Whoever is for the interactive visits, then have fun with the Venetian jeweler Valeria Sacchi Boncompagni, who over the course of a two-hour experience will give participants the opportunity to create their personal jewel by hand, using the lost wax casting technique.?

It is even possible to learn about the glazing leather polishing technique in the workshop of the young and skilled shoemaker Gabriele Gmeiner, who settled in Venice from native Austria. How about witnessing the art of bespoke shoemaking and maybe have a pair of shoes made for you?

Finally, what is Venice without the beautiful gondolas? And of course the construction of the gondolas with a trip to the Crea Shipyard is an opportunity too. There, thanks to their manual skills in woodworking, the master gondoliers give life to the most iconic Venetian boats.

Even Venice Design Week offers since years its exclusive tours, to reinforce the breathing and living always creative soul of Venice.

THE HOMO FABER EVENT

Tracing Venice

Visitors at the Homo Faber Event 2022 in Venice will be stimulated to change perspective and seek the beauty that lies right under their feet.

Result of a creative collaboration between the Zanellato / Bortotto design studio and the metal manufacturer De Castelli, the exhibition “Tracing Venice” takes visitors on a journey through the history of the mosaic tradition of St. Mark's Basilica.

De Castelli metal inlays inspired by San Marco mosaics

The Basilica is characterized by polychrome mosaics of the twelfth century that decorate more than 2,000 square meters of surface. This complex set of ornamental mosaics describes distant worlds, their stories and their encounter with Venice. Being one of the most exposed areas of the lagoon city, San Marco was deeply affected by the rising tide, with consequent deterioration and wear of its mosaic treasures.

To reflect the erosion caused by water and time, De Castelli went beyond the limits of experimentation by employing cutting-edge technology combined with extraordinary craftsmanship. Copper, brass and steel acquire multicolored shades and a range of extraordinary finishes in which oxidation, erosion and brushing are transformed into a kaleidoscope of chromatic variations. Geometric shapes and colors become a mosaic where the different surfaces alternate, blend and multiply, almost as if they were living materials.

“The constant commitment to research and design are at the center of a project born from the fusion of two philosophies, that of De Castelli and that of Zanellato / Bortotto. This affinity of visions has given rise to unique surfaces, which surprise with their creative magic and speak of a millenary tradition. " - De Castelli, producer of metals

"The Basilica represents the resilience of a city that for centuries has resisted the climatic phenomena and the violent way in which they often affect its structures." - Zanellato / Bortotto, design studio

An engaging experience welcomes the public in the former Gandini Pool and in the surrounding garden, masterfully transformed into a meditative and surprising space that recalls the stage setting of Madama Butterfly.

The theater comes to life in the original costumes created by Frida Parmeggiani and in the video portraits of the famous choreographer Suzushi Hanayagi, descendant of a theatrical family with 400 years of history.

Wait in the Shadowy Calmness, is conceived by Robert Wilson, the iconic American visual artist and director. The exhibition reveals the influence of Japanese culture on his theatrical productions, in particular on his representation of Puccini's Madama Butterfly, staged for the first time in Paris in 1993.?

The public will be able to experience Wilson's theatrical genius firsthand, that geniality that transforms a swimming pool from the Sixties into a theatrical set thanks to the skilful use of lights, sound and many other special effects.
