Discourse on “You Are Me That You Shall See”

“I am not what you think I am. You are what you think I am.”

Seeker: Difficult to understand.

Maladkar: (Smiles) It simply means that as a person is so does he see others. If you are good, you will see good in others. If you are bad, you will see bad in others. In short, as you are so you see others too ! You may think that the other is so and so type of person but actually he is not what you think he is. He is perceived as you are so the other is seen as you are. If you are good, the other becomes good and if you are bad, then the other becomes bad in your eyes. So what you think others are is actually a reflection of who you are ! Shams of Tabriz rightly said, ““Let me give you the mirror, but if you see some fault on its face, do not blame the mirror, but something reflected onto the mirror.  Know that it is your own image; find the fault in yourself.” You are me that you shall see ! Rumi so beautifully explains this concept of keeping oneself so clean like the clean mirror that the other is also reflected clean because the original image that of you is clean. But better be a window than a mirror. The day you become a window instead of a mirror you can see yourself and others much better, for mirror just reflects yourself but a window helps you see from broader perspective yourself and others ! Rumi goes on to say, “Do you know why your mirror does not glitter ? Because the rust is not cleansed from its surface.” He explains how we can cleanse ourself, “Through remembrance and meditation the heart is polished until the mirror of the heart receives virginal images.” And thanks for asking this clarification cause if you never ask you never learn, and same is true for teaching, you never learn what you don’t teach. So goes both ways for we all are seekers of the truth and seeking truth will give us what we are actually searching.

Seeker: Oh, very thoughtful Sir ! And truth indeed. Thanks for this enlightenment. It has cleared certain inhibitions I had in my mind.
