Disclosing Venice Design Week 2022's official theme
Venice Design Week is officially open for registrations as plans for our next edition are built by the day.?
The event, that reaches its thirteenth year in a row and keeps on growing, will take place between the 1st and the 9th of October 2022, with the usual form: many exciting dedicated paths scattered around the city, aimed to integrate good revolutionary design with iconic locations in the city and islands.
With the usual intent to highlight the magnificence of Venice, allowing visitors to discover otherwise off limits locations, and enhancing the talent of creativity by mixing tradition and new, Venice Design Week works daily to grant every year a festival as never seen before.
Even the thirteenth edition comes with a specific theme. For 2022, following the trends in design, and challenging them allowing for open interpretation, the focus will be on the concept of “Origins”.
Origins: the theme
Origins: this is the theme for Venice Design Week. Following the fluid spirit of time, the logo in Earthly tones displays the theme taking form on a flat surface, as it was brought by the waves, or formed by the wind blowing, integrating elements of nature:
Designers, brands and universities who intend to participate, have to consider the theme in its wholeness.
Possible ways to interpret the 2022 theme
In the spirit of the festival, we allow participants to bring their own view and perception, although we are willing to give some suggestions.
Circular economy is of course a recurring reference, as circularity does not only bring materials to their original strength and purpose, it allows them to have a complete new unprecedented use: the origin of a new intrinsic value.

Upcycling and recycling are fairly representative of a sustainable way to regenerate the sense of origins endlessly.
Localisation, think local, act global can be seen as a return to the origins, and so brands and designers who are focusing on territorial production, or on the use of local materials, can be interested in promoting their creations in the stunning scenarios that only Venice can offer.
But origins can also be the beginning of something absolutely new. Every story has a beginning, especially in the new virtual and augmented realities, their origins are just in our hands, they are happening as we speak. So high tech, metaverse, augmented and virtual realities are comfortably home too.
Origins may reflect on the need of a designer to relate to his or her own original paths, or a celebration of traditional design, a personal inspiration. Maybe after years in the profession, brands are rediscovering something of their own starts and giving them a new life?
Universities are also welcome to challenge their students, at the beginning of their career, to interpret the theme according to their specific educational moment. It’s their origins, after all.
Welcome is also the design that celebrate "Origins" in a wider sense. We are curious to see intercultural mixtures, homages to far away countries and stories that are told like a novel in forms and structures.
