Have you ever found yourself struggling to stay motivated to reach your goals?
Maybe you've been meaning to get to the gym, take a daily walk, journal, read, or meal prep your lunches but you can't seem to find the energy and motivation to stay consistent. ?Does this resonate with you?
The problem with relying on motivation is that it can be fleeting and inconsistent. ?Motivation is often driven by emotions and heavily influenced by external factors such as the environment, circumstances, or the actions of others so it’s normal for motivation to ebb and flow. ?This is where discipline comes in. ?
Self discipline is the ability to control your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors so you can act in a a way that aligns with your goals, even when motivation is low. It often requires a form of delayed gratification which is what can make it so hard. ?Making the decision to go to the gym when you just don’t feel like it can suck in the moment. ?But choosing to go and get the workout done is thinking to your future self.
This week I had planned an early morning hike up Sanitas, a short but steep peak in Boulder, CO, but when the alarm went off to wake, there was a moment of choice. ?My bed felt extra cozy and warm, my legs were still quite sore from my previous workout, and there was NO reason I had to go. ? I wasn’t motivated to get up and going, but I found the discipline to act in alignment with my health and fitness goals. ?
Self discipline IS a form of self care AND self respect. ?Choosing to do the difficult task, to act in alignment with your goals, and be productive EVEN in the face of waning motivation IS choosing to honor and respect the best version of yourself. ?

Once you take action, and see results, THIS fuels future motivation but waiting for motivation to take action is a recipe for disaster. Choosing to go to the gym, to eat foods that nourish you and avoid foods that don’t, to go to bed early and not hit that snooze... these are acts of discipline that give you freedom and are truly an act of self-respect.

There are times when the psyche is high and you’re raring to go but relying on motivation to get the work done will never generate the productive life I know you want to live. ?
