Discipline Is The Bridge Between Goals And Achievements

A notable figure in the personal development space who keeps popping up, that I can’t ignore, is John Maxwell. Recently I heard a quote of his that really stood out to me and deserves to be broken down. The quote is “Discipline is the bridge between goals and achievements.”

As someone on their personal development journey, you probably know all about goal setting. You want to set SMART Goals that are specific and measurable, you want to put a deadline on them, and you’re 42% more likely to achieve them if they’re written down....

This is all great and useful information that but there’s one major problem: There’s a difference between goal setting and goal achieving.

Having a clear, well-thought out, structured goal is not enough to actually achieve it. What is?

“Discipline is the bridge between goals and achievements.”

Goals act as environments that provide specific guidance for your behavior. Goals don’t actually do the work, they provide a filter that helps you to follow through on the right things you need to do to get the results you desire.

Taking consistent, disciplined action toward your goals is the engine that actually creates change in your life.?

Here’s an example: I set a goal to get 10 gyms, that I had no previous relationship with, registered for a nonprofit project I’m working on. This goal helped me to see the specific actions I needed to take to hit that goal, which was cold calling.?

Knowing that I need to make calls is one thing, and doing it is another. That’s the point here. That’s the bridge. The discipline to do what you say you’re going to do will put you on the path to achieving the result. So I committed to cold calling 50 gyms in a week and guess what? I didn’t only hit my goal, I beat it.
