PA showcases the game-changing capabilities of computational design and artificial intelligence.
Hi everyone,
We hope you're all safe and having a good weekend. ??
Firstly, we want to bring your attention to the conflict in Gaza, which is still ongoing. During the attack, many cultural heritage sites and ancient monuments were destroyed, including Gaza's oldest mosque.
As architects and urban planners, we have the ability to make a difference before, during, and after a disaster. As spacemakers, we have more power than we think.
One way we can help is through disaster mapping, also known as crisis mapping. This method helps evaluate, record, and communicate data about a disastrous event and the distribution of its effects. Humanitarian organizations are using machine learning to assess earthquake damage and plan rescue attempts quickly. Researchers and urban planners around the world are using machine learning algorithms and satellite photos to identify and analyze building and infrastructure damage in disaster situations.
This year, we spotlighted disaster relief architecture in PA many times. The goal of disaster relief architecture is to provide basic needs in comfortable conditions for victims. For example, we can design 3D-printed housing as a post-disaster temporary shelter for disaster-affected areas.
According to the latest research, approximately 23 million people have been displaced from their homes every year since 2008, and the numbers are projected to increase due to weather-related accidents and population density. Emerging technologies in the construction industry can help us rebuild cities and communities in disaster-affected areas.
We hope these articles will help you think about how we can help disaster-affected areas as space makers. Virtual Reality, which has developed over the years and gained a large place in our lives, has become frequently used with its wide range of opportunities in various sectors. It is an immersive technology that transports users into computer-generated environments.
Tune in to PATALKS #55, where we had a conversation with Arian Hakimi – the founder of Arian Hakimi Architects and the former Lead Designer at ZHA. During the episode, He discusses his journey in architecture, recent projects he has worked on, and his vision for computational and parametric design.
The impact of heat is felt by everyone, but it affects people living in cities more than those in suburban or rural areas. The urban heat island effect is responsible for the higher temperatures experienced in many cities worldwide. This increase in temperature is mainly due to climate change and the growing number of heat islands in urban areas. So, with the increasing temperature of the Earth, can we find ways to cool down our cities?
Mathematicians once feared that the calculators might replace them. The same did the farmers feel when tractors were introduced. But, neither the robots replaced the engineers’ job leading to a mass unemployment crisis. While all these fears were brought alongside the technological revolutions of the time, history suggests that new opportunities and challenges also accompanied them.

Creativity has always been at the core of architecture. Whether introducing elegant curves to a building or detailing its infrastructure, every aspect of architectural design equates to an artist shaping a sculpture. In such a craft, introducing Artificial Intelligence might seem like an unexpected addition to a creative activity.
What are we to make of AI? As Patrik Schumacher has argued, is it an amazing tool everyone should use? Or is it terrifying, as some might argue? And does it even constitute a bigger threat to humanity than climate change, as Mo Gawdat, former Chief Financial Officer of Google, has claimed?
In the mid-20th century, with the attainment of independence in South Asia, many cities’ appearances changed along with the architectural style. Now called post-colonial architecture, it began with the independence desire and triggered symbolic new beginnings in architecture.
Googie can be defined as a futuristic style of architectural design, which was born in the 1930s and stayed popular roughly between 1945 and 1970. Its popularity was mainly in the United States, particularly in Los Angeles and the surrounding suburbs in Southern California.
The developing technology has had an impact on architecture over time, as in any other sector. It has affected how buildings are designed and constructed. Looking from the beforehand technical perspective, architectural practice started from hand drawings to advanced computer-aided design (CAD) tools, and now we have the integration of artificial intelligence (AI).
