Not Disabled. Yet? Here’s Why You Should Care About Inclusion in the Screen Industry

Let’s talk about disability. Specifically, disability in the screen industry. I know, it makes some people worry - like the conversation is going to be all gloom, paperwork and checking your privilege. It’s not. It’s about value, as in “we all have value” - a line that hit me squarely between the eyes when I undertook? Disability Justice Lens, a new eLearning course built by A2K Media, a disability-led production company.

Here’s the thing: in the screen industry, we LOVE stories. We love creativity, bold thinking, and perspectives that haven’t been heard before. And yet, when it comes to inclusion, we have got work to do.?

It’s not just about Disabled people being physically excluded, it’s the attitudinal barriers, which Ade Djajmihardja, co-creator of Disability Justice Lens, calls the “soft bigotry of low expectations.” Oof.

The Disability Justice Lens eLearning course doesn’t lecture you. It’s not boring. It’s funny and sharp. It was created by Disabled people who work in the screen industry, for the screen industry. It offers tools, insights, and practical steps to make our workplaces - and our projects - more inclusive.

Because here’s the truth: When we include everyone, we create better work. Different perspectives drive innovation, creativity, and yes - profit. It’s not charity; it’s good business. It’s also good humanity.

So, if you’re in the screen industry - crew, producers, decision-makers - I encourage you to check out Disability Justice Lens. Let’s stop unintentionally (or intentionally) excluding talent. Let’s stop being part of the problem. And let’s make sure that no one - no matter who they are or where they sit in the industry - ever has to fight for their right to simply contribute.

Because, as Ade says, we all have value.?
