Disabled ? No, incompetent

I feel like current DEI practices are hurting the community of people with disabilities. We have the stigma hovering over our heads as not being "fully functioning humans, contributing to the society".

The Boeing case where Elon Musk is accusing Boeing for prioritising DEI practices over safety... didn't help us as a community and fed into the narrative I laid out above.

True is Boeing's mistake is not DEI practices, but hiring not qualified workforce https://www.seattletimes.com/business/boeing-aerospace/faa-says-boeing-is-appointing-people-lacking-expertise-to-oversee-airplane-certification/

This Glassdoor review from 2018 says it all, however the description of Boeing being racist and then putting DEI practices above all feels like oxymoron. It shows, that at least Boeing doesn't understand the DEI ...and consequentially I see people don't understand it either. https://www.glassdoor.com/Reviews/Employee-Review-Boeing-RVW21777259.htm

I believe we as a society we are more for the appearance, than fixing the deeply rooted causes of any issues. I hate the corporate educations for sexual harassment and DEI which are accompanied by staged pictures of group of people who are "representing" the diversity. These pictures are for the show. We are focused on surface level, yet so 70-80% of disabilities are non apparent. How do you show it in your company that you are diverse, when you can't look like you are ? ??♀? Though right, because marketing.

We mix knowledge and ability to deliver with how people appear. Boeing feeds the narrative that actually people with disabilities and probably all the people in the mix of DEI are unqualified, lazy and incompetent. This is completely opposite of what I am trying to talk about. Even though some people with disabilities are unqalified, lazy and incompetent, at the end of the day, we are all just people and ignoring this, would mean, that an only the minorities can get on slippery slope of being on the outskirt of society.

Don't hire people to fit your company Christmas card postcard. Hire people because they can do the work. They maybe just need accessible workplace, or they need noise cancelling headphones or ... anything to help their job properly, but they want to do the job and they are qualified for it.

Boeing literally hired anyone off the street. It doesn't mean that the person was part of any DEI group. Boeing just didn't or maybe still doesn't have standards.

When being around people with disabilities and management who is hiring, I get the question how to treat someone who is not performing. I asked how do you treat the people who are not disabled and are not performing? They go on and talk about communication, understanding, maybe fixing what they need to perform better etc etc... Yeah, and the same way you treat the person with disabilities who is not performing. You communicate. If they reciprocate and there is improvement - win. If you offer support, and they continue to decline.. maybe there is time to say goodbye or rotate to more fitting role.

Incompetency doesn't equal disability. Andrea Boccelli is not less competent opera singer, than anyone else, just because he needs to be guided to the stage. Of course he would be incompetent roof worker. Remove obstacles to perform the job, hire and reward competency.

Boeing problem is rooted deeper and started earlier. Just recently read this article that gave more insights: https://kechlibar.net/2024/08/27/ponekud-prodlouzena-sluzebni-cesta-aneb-kdyz-misto-inzenyra-zavladne-manazer/ Basically, Boeing was merged with McDonell Douglas back in the 1990s. Until then, they were a tech company led by tech people focused to produce the best possible products. But this merger brought a toxic corporate manager-centric culture which slowly rots the company from inside, replacing focus on tech by focus on corporate politics. DEI parody with hiring regardless of skills is just part of it, a symptom. And this already led to consequences, like the failures of the Boeing MAX planes - or the newest blooper where two astronauts are stranded in space for 8 months, instead of a planned 8 day stay. Unfortunately this kind of corporate culture is not limited to Boeing, it is quite common.
