Disability Pride Month... What ?

That was my first reaction, when I found a TikTok video about Disability Pride Month and its flag last year.?

Being in community of English speakers for past 17 years and employed by American companies.. I visited US in July of 2016 for a Rare disease conference, which I led. I was directly in contact with US health organisations like NORD and many others... yet 2022 is the first time I heard about it.. It's disappointing how quiet is the voice of the community, that even those who are directly involved in the topic, won't find information about it, unless we search for it, or some tired algorithm finds us.

Apparently July is in English speaking countries like USA and UK: Disability pride month, since 1990.

Just to compare the LGBTQ Pride Month came to existence only 9 years later.

The attached picture is a flag representing disability pride month and the meaning is:?

  • Red: physical disabilities
  • Gold: cognitive and intellectual disabilities
  • White: nonvisible and undiagnosed disabilities
  • Blue: psychiatric disabilities
  • Green: sensory disabilities
  • The Black Field: A color of mourning and rage; for those who are victims of Ableist violence, and also rebellion and protest
  • The Parallel Stripes: Solidarity within the Disability Community and all its differences
  • The Diagonal Band: “Cutting across” barriers that separate disabled people; creativity and light cutting through the darkness

In order to honour this month, I’ll be hi-lighting here the movie, people and other content of people with disabilities, who are sharing their own story.

The one movie which I believe captures everything is Inside I`m Dancing/Rory O'Shea Was Here This movie is so great on so many levels.. go and watch it.
