Disability Is Not Incapability
It is estimated by the International Labour Organization (ILO.org) that 386 million of the world’s working-age people have some kind of disability.? Unemployment among persons with disabilities is as high as 80 percent in some countries. Sadly employers often assume that persons with disabilities are unable or not qualified to work.
In Liberia, people with disabilities are regularly not allowed to work, or job train; and they are even excluded from other income-generating opportunities. Our buildings, transport systems, and other systems are not even supportive of a person with a disability.
As HRs, regardless of the sector, you find yourself we have a responsibility to draft an inclusive policy that creates the opportunity for people living with disability.? We have a responsibility to frown on any discriminatory policy that excludes one characteristic of people from living a decent life and earning a living wage.

What will it take for government or statutory public institutions to mandate each ministry to employ at least one person living people with disability?? What will it take for the private sector to be more inclusive in hiring people with disability in their workforce and to have a reasonable policy to accommodate them? The government goes after loans and funding from international bodies but the government is indisposed to mandate institutions to hire a person living with a disability; what a contradiction.
?Lining up people living with disability at your gate begging for ration is like keeping them on oxygen. How long can a person live on oxygen? Those quick-fix approaches are onerous. Let us draft good policies to protect people with disability and create more inclusive opportunities.
Liberia has made significant legislative progress in supporting people with disabilities, but there is still a long way to go. Stigma and poverty prevent individuals with disabilities from living fulfilling lives. Collaboration between activists, and the Liberian government is critical to improve their quality of life. Let's work together to break down barriers and create a society where everyone can thrive

11 个月Couldn't agree more! On the other hand, I think we need to also embark on a robust awareness on disability inclusion targeted at employers. The reality is that most employers have little or no understanding of disability issues.
