Disability History Month – Introducing Esther Shawe, Disability Support Network Chair
East of England Ambulance Service NHS Trust
Outstanding care, exceptional people, every hour of every day #WeAreEEAST
"Hi Everyone, my name is Esther, and I have been the Chair of the Disability Support Network (DSN) since it was established four and a half years ago. I am committed to fostering an inclusive work environment that will benefit everyone.
I first joined EEAST 15 years ago, starting as a student paramedic at Billericay station, then moving to Chelmsford station, where I spent the next 13 1/3 years. I am currently a leading operations manager (LOM) in south west Essex, based out of Basildon station.
Before I joined the Trust I served nine years within the RAF, worked at the Bank of England and also at The Royal Association for Deaf People, where I trained to become an NVQ Level 3 British Sign Language communicator. This is a passion of mine, and I am currently working on a language and communication project for EEAST.
While aware of the likelihood of being dyslexic for many years, I independently adapted to manage the challenges in the workplace. Upon embarking on my management journey, it became evident that a more structured approach was necessary. Acknowledging this, I faced the reality of my dyslexia and the need for support. Despite initial reservations, I underwent the assessment process, realizing the benefits of formal support. In retrospect, I wish I had taken this step sooner.
I am also a mum to my two daughters who are 20 and 26, and have been a single parent for 16 years. We live with our two dogs, a beagle and a Chihuahua shiatzu.
As we have shared throughout Disability History Month, the DSN has recently recruited a new team to join myself, and I am excited to work with both Ashleigh and Holly in the future to continue building on the success of our network."
