Disability Dialogue
Susan Schaffer
Founder of Disability Dialogue- Society is stronger when it inucludes all of it's citizen.
The speaker of a workshop began by speaking in very broken English. After a few minutes he began to use perfect English and asked what the audience thought. People fall into stereotypes (quick negative judgements) can be made before learning more about the person and/or situation. In the case of disability, a person who can't walk may sit on a couch for a few minutes and the mind says "normal" a person who walks may sit in a wheelchair and the mind says "disabled." Sit in a wheelchair for a few hours and do an activity (work, food shop, visit a mall) An hour later process the experience. I plan this powerful yet simple activity. Folks dialogue on what was easy/hard about it.
