dirty solopreneur secret

dirty solopreneur secret

I want to let you in on a dirty little secret of solopreneurship I’ll simply call “templates.”

First, it's important to recognize that the opposite of templates, improvisation or originality, is usually a trap.

When I started my solo career as a freelance writer, I thought that's what clients were paying me for: originality. Brand new ideas. Raw, dazzling creativity in cask strength.

Soon enough, I discovered that I could succeed as an artist (with originality) and fail as a service provider (because I hadn't helped my clients achieve their goals).

I could take a client's money and use it to make stuff that was beautifully useless to them.

That's not a great business strategy, certainly not if I wanted to get referrals, and so setting aside originality in favor of effectiveness represented a kind of liberation for me.

If my primary goal was helping my clients get satisfying outcomes, then I needed some creativity, yes, but usually not originality. Repeating what had worked before was much more effective.

Enter templates, yours or other people’s.

About Austin L. Church

Hi, I'm Austin L. Church, a writer, marketing consultant, and business coach.

I started freelancing in 2009 after finishing my M.A. in Literature and getting laid off from a marketing agency. Freelancing led to a portfolio of mobile apps, tech startup, children's book, branding studio, and consulting practice.

Over the last 15 years, I've made north of $1.8 million as a creative entrepreneur, and looking back, I see so many missed opportunities.

That's why I'm so passionate about stacking up specific advantages and teaching freelancers, consultants, and creators how to do the same.

I want more of us to find our income-lifestyle sweet spot.

Agreed! They can be so useful. But I do think it's important to remember that they're a tool, like design software or a grammar checker. To get the most (ahem, anything truly effective) out of them the person using them still has to know what they're doing -- an understanding of why they work and when to go off piste. And have the basics down, the core skills and a grasp of the brand's fundamentals. Otherwise it can be a bit like trying to do MadLibs without knowing the parts of speech...

Austin L. Church yes to anything that increases efficiency and frees up time. Who wants to reinvent the wheel all the time. Also “bird-crapping uninformed opinions” just became my new favorite Austin-ism ??
