Dirty Laundry game

Dirty Laundry game

Let me introduce you to the game I started playing with my teams about 6 years ago. One of my goals as a leader is to create a safe environment for my teams to be engaged, give and get feedback. In this game a team member seats in front and the other team members give them feedback . What they do great and what they need to improve . The teams members take turns to get the feedback. There are a few rules in order to make this a success

1) The team has to be mature enough to handle the feedback otherwise do a soft version where you you can even make people write on papers and do not share from who the feedback is coming from .

2) The person who is seating in front is not allow to talk back, justify himself or answer back, he or she is supposed to listen and take it

3)The team members are supposed to be honest, brutally honest

4) Everyone should say something without fear

5)Most of all the leader of the team should also be in front to get feedback from the team . I remember when I sat in the hot seat , I had mixed feelings but I sat and took it in like a champ.

6) Do not kill the messenger

7) Work with the feedback to help the team get better, individually or as a group without referring to the session

8) Record the feedback to be shared with the team members

For your information the 1st time I played this game with my team, someone cried and I had to console them. What happened in the next two months was magical. The person took the feedback and improved significantly. I remember the day she led a presentation to our customer in English . The customer was very delighted with the team and gave great feedback to the company directors .

Let me know if you try it and what are the results and contact me if you want to discuss more .

I wonder if I could stick to the ground rules?? Taking negative feedback without the ability to justify ones self must be torture. Well done to you and your team.
