The quick oomph of nootropics may offer a short-term solution to fatigue, exhaustion or simply wanting to feel more switched on—but at what cost and for how long? When it comes to consistently performing at your best, the answer is far simpler: feeding your brain right.
What is a nootropic?
Nootropics—often advertised as cognitive enhancers—are any substance that alters the brain, and claim to offer a quick fix to everyday problems like tiredness, stress, and lack of concentration. Although often used as prescription medication—over-the-counter and natural options are gaining traction. And, while the thought of popping a pill for a quick way to supercharge your output sounds like an easy solution, everything from nicotine and caffeine through to vitamin powders and synthetic drugs can be classed as a nootropic, leaving the space wide open to unregulated substances.
Here’s what you need to know:
?? —Symptoms like fatigue and lack of focus are frustrating and problematic—and while looking for a quick fix to cover them up seems tempting in the short term, the root cause of these issues often comes down to nutrition or lack of.
?? —There’s no research to look at the long-term effects of taking nootropics, but a worrying preliminary trial has shown that using modafinil (a common cognitive enhancer), can actually result in problems with brain plasticity in the long run.
?? —Lots of nootropics supplements are packed with caffeine, which gives a quick buzz rather than any long-term, meaningful effects. It’s also highly addictive and potentially harmful. Any more than 400mg per day can lead to heart palpitations and even death.

4 年Technically a lot of the ingredients in your product have nootropic effects, you just chose not to market them as such. So the "What is a nootropic" section would benefit from taking into account that most B vitamins as well as choline are considered nootropic. And this is not a marketing term, but a recognised term used to index clinical literature by the National Library of Medicine, what is known as a "Medical Subheading". An example of such use in literature is posted below. Bumping all nootropic with nicotine and drugs is a little imprecise. Have a great week! https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/23403474/
