The Dirt on the News:
This month we are seeing Georgia Power sign a deal to obtain 8 million tons of coal ash to produce cement for infrastructure projects over the next 15 years. The Department of Energy announced a $3.5billion plan to help overhaul the nation’s electric grid, bringing it up to modern standards when over half of transmission lines and transformers were installed before 1970. In a changing climate, new worker protections are being pressed at state legislatures as heat related injuries and illness plague outdoor workers. Heatwaves are the deadliest form of extreme weather. Finally, Alabama is waiting for the EPA’s word on whether millions of tons of coal ash can be stored in ponds or if it will have to be moved to landfills. The decision will have a massive impact on Alabama’s future ground water contamination.

Employment Situation:
Total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 150,000 in October, and the unemployment rate changed little at 3.9 percent, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported recently. Job gains occurred in health care, government, and social assistance. Employment declined in manufacturing due to strike activity.
In October, construction employment continued to trend up (+23,000), about in line with the average monthly gain of 18,000 over the prior 12 months. Employment continued to trend up over the month in specialty trade contractors (+14,000) and construction of buildings (+6,000).

For Veterans Day, I wanted to take a moment to express my deepest gratitude for your dedicated servicemembers to our nation. In honor of this special day, I reflect on the sacrifices made by individuals whose commitment to duty has helped secure the freedoms we hold dear.
Remembering Our Veterans:
I want to personally thank every other veterans that made the promise to protect our way of life. As a veteran myself, I know first hand the personal and familial sacrifices that they can endure. Your service has left an indelible mark on our country, and for that, I am truly grateful.
May this Veterans Day be a moment of reflection and appreciation for the significant contributions that our current and former service members have made for our great country.
#THEDIRT Top companies recognize the challenge of finding top talent as noted by Jacobs own Steve Cherry, Construction Division Manager. "With Jacobs being a leader in the energy utilities/CCR industries, locating and retaining top quartile employees is the hardest task to complete for a client. The most important thing when trying to locate a new person to your team is being partnered with Stu Keeter of MRI. Stu is one of the leading experts in the field of CCR; people from senior level managers to field engineers. He always has a knack for finding and locating the top talent in the U.S."
