Directing Attention

Directing Attention

Greetings, Carl here.

Investing your attention is hard, but it’s a skill worth practicing.

Try a simple exercise: sit comfortably, close your eyes, and count your breaths. You’ll quickly notice how easily your attention can wander.

This is important because spending time and investing attention are two very different experiences.

You can be with someone physically but without truly engaging mentally, and we all know how that feels.

People can feel the difference.

True investment comes when you focus your attention.

If you liked this, I think you'd LOVE listening to the audio version.

This wisdom reminds me of a saying I once read: “A man is wealthy in proportion to the things he can leave alone”. We all think about financial budgets, but how many consider the need for an Attention budget? Big material ambitions, usually ego-based, take time, energy and attention away from other goals and priorities, even if the financial resources are available. The world is full of people who start a project, then fail to complete or execute. Why else is the sale of your yacht “the 2nd happiest day of your life?”

This is sooooo true, Carl, especially as people find it harder and harder to take their eyes away from their phones. I LOVE the thought of "investing your attention" of being truly present when with people. ??????
