Direct search case: Lead Level Designer

Today our team decided to dedicate a post to trends in design. Many may say that designers are not as in demand as other IT roles, but after careful research, we are convinced that designers are not losing their importance. If you pay attention to open vacancies in various large companies, in every second you will find the role of designer. This speciality has its own nuances and peculiarities. We would very much like to emphasize that today this direction is not as much about art as it is about analytics. The ability to understand where to look and what metrics are of main importance is a big part of the job. On top of that, to create interesting new products and services, designers need to be versatile and keep up with the latest technology and social media. There are many variations of this role in IT such as:

  • web designer
  • UX/UI designer
  • Art Director
  • Game designer and Level designer (also must be mentioned since not even many people understand the difference between these two roles).??

Our Case

Not so long ago we managed to find excellent candidate for the Lead/Senior Level Designer position in a huge company developer of casual Mobile Games based in Cyprus. That was some kind of challenge given that this speciality is too narrow and most candidates were not suitable because of their lack of motivation to work longer than 2 years in one company. Besides, the company was looking for a candidate with excellent soft skills, good understanding of mobile casual games, experience leading a team, 3+ years of experience as a Level Designer in a company with 2+ million installations, good understanding of analytics and good command of English. Moreover, in connection with global processes, the new trend known to all as movement of company headquarters from Russia abroad, has created another difficulty - compulsory relocation.??

How did we handle it??

At first, we created a map of the market - defined interesting companies where candidates could get relevant experience and then conducted interviews, assessing not only hard but mostly soft and management skills. After reviewing 139 candidates we found the one from ex-Russian gaming company, he suits the culture and all the requirements of the Client's company. We've managed to highlight all the perks of the candidate's shift from his current company to the Client's one, which created a win-win case.??

This case demonstrated the ability of our team to respond correctly to the stated requirements of the client. By the end of research our team managed to:?

  1. create market map of good companies for designers;?
  2. analyze which companies require what level of competencies;?
  3. understand what designers need in a new workplace and how to describe a vacancy to make it more attractive.??

Furthermore, we are capable of guiding our clients on specific salary expectations of candidates for different levels in design.??
