In the last issue we talked about how to retain your current customers. After all, selling to a current customer sees a success rate of 60-70%, while the success rate of selling to a new customer is just 5-20%. If you missed it, here's a link to it so you can catch up quickly and bounce back here.

Let's talk about now the how of getting those customers to purchase something.

There's two different broad-based buckets of marketing you see - branding and direct response.

Branding is when an ad is trying to change an emotion or perception of a product. Luxury goods and beverages are great examples of branding ads.

The other, and what we'll be talking about here, is direct response marketing which is marketing that demands a response from your audience.

This type of marketing is used to answer questions, present your branding, products and the reason you do what you do. Customers love this, as they are offered the opportunity to respond, whether that be in the way of signing up for a newsletter, posting a comment on your site or blog, or purchasing a product from you.?

So, what does direct response marketing look like? Well, it comes in many forms, including:

  • Direct mail
  • Print ads
  • Radio and TV ads
  • Coupons or other incentives
  • "Click here" social media posts

Some of the advantages of direct marketing are:

  • A great way to use free time during lulls in business
  • Productive way to communicate and empower you to create more relationships
  • Great way to up- and cross-sell to current customers
  • Low cost way to rustle up new business
  • Used as leverage to turn small sales into large sales
  • Supplement your current marketing program
  • Cost-effective way to reach target markets
  • Offers measurable results
  • Reach outside your local area for new business
  • Increase the effectiveness of your sales force

These are all great things that can come from just taking a few simple steps to putting together a direct response marketing plan and executing it.

“I honestly don’t think you’ll ever find a safer, lower-risk, higher-profit method of increasing your business or profession than direct-response marketing.” Jay Abraham

What You Missed

Are you sick of low response rates to your emails and marketing efforts? Without looking at it I can't be 100% certain what's wrong but I'm guessing its not following at least one of the core elements of The Conversion Equation. What is the Conversion Equation? Quite simply, and I might be a bit biased, but it's the secret formula to writing effective marketing messages. You can check it out below:

Also I got schooled on my negotiation skills by my then 6-year-old daughter. Read about it, and the lessons learned, here:

About me

My goal is straightforward… to help serious business owners generate more clients, close more sales and increase their overall revenue and profits… quickly and inexpensively, by creating their own post-pandemic marketing plan. Likely what worked prior to our pandemic adventure is not quite the same any longer and needs to be updated.

If you’re interested in adding an extra $100K+ to your bottom-line revenue over the next 12 months… without selling more time for money… then I can help you.

Huge fan of direct response and Ogilvy in here! Will make sure to take a few minutes to read this week's newsletter. And I couldn't agree more: Direct response marketing is one of the best ways to do marketing, no doubt!

Right there is a good example of direct response marketing - which really is the only way businesses, especially small businesses should be marketing.
