The Direct Pathway to Success

The Direct Pathway to Success

Success is a very popular topic to explore today, especially when the world is facing so many challenges and difficulties. Naturally, in response to the world’s voracious appetite for more knowledge about how to create success, an entire industry has sprung up online, offering everything from miracle cures to get-rich-quick schemes. This might be a good moment to see if we can distil the quest for success into a handful of essential concepts. Feel free to share your views, comments, suggestions and experiences.

Let’s start with a couple of simple questions. Do you have a list of clearly-defined goals that you want to achieve within a given time-frame? Do you have a detailed vision of the future that represents exactly how you want your life to be? Have you prepared a daily list of key activities that will make your goals a reality?

It’s easy to nod in agreement, isn’t it? But behind these questions is a powerful principle that’s often forgotten, overlooked or ignored. Can you guess what it might be?

f there’s one mechanism that can turn your day around and convert challenges and frustrations into stepping stones to progress – it’s the decision to take action. Because -

The Universe always rewards action.

It might be helpful at this point to recall that life’s pathway is rarely straight and rarely unencumbered with obstacles. It loops and twists and folds back on itself in ways that often seem beyond our control. And this is a very powerful insight. After all, it can be more than a little confusing when the pathway suddenly takes an unexpected turn. And that’s because we have an instinctive expectation that the road will always run in a straight line from A to B. But that is not how it works.

?Do you want to know who you are? Don’t ask. Act!

Action will delineate and define you.

―Thomas Jefferson

We know that it’s extremely important to have goals, to set a clearly-defined destination for ourselves, a compass bearing that becomes the main heading for our efforts. But the route from where we are right now to the great destination we’ve chosen for ourselves never follows a straight line.

In the face of setbacks and unexpected twists in the pathway, it’s easy to lose sight of where we planned to go. The route veers away from our chosen compass heading and we suddenly feel lost and confused. Yet this change in direction is completely natural. It happens all the time. That’s why it’s so important to know where you’re going. Because if your pathway isn’t taking you where you need to go, that’s a perfect invitation for you to adjust your course, assess your activities and choose a better way to get back on track. It’s very helpful that it’s your goal that provides your compass heading. How you get to your goal is less important than having a clearly-defined destination to aim for.

The path to success is to take massive, determined actions.

―Tony Robbins

It’s only through the process of taking action that we can determine if we’re still on track. When we appreciate that we’re more likely to be off-track most of the time rather than precisely on-track, we can use our actions as a compass check to see whether we’re still heading in the right direction. It’s a fabulous habit to adopt and an essential activity to apply every week:

‘Does this pathway or particular approach take me where I want to go?’

There are so many benefits to taking action, especially in the face of adversity, that it’s worth reminding ourselves of the advantages.

Inaction breeds doubt and fear. Action breeds confidence and courage. If you want to conquer fear, do not sit home and think about it. Go out and get busy.

―Dale Carnegie

Action helps us to feel that we’re in control. We recognise that we have the capacity to choose what we do. Even in the face of setbacks and disappointments. Taking a step is akin to taking the initiative. Moving ahead helps us feel that we’re moving out of the limiting situation that’s obstructing the pathway. It’s deeply empowering.

By taking action, we demonstrate that we’re absolutely capable of making decisions. We are neither constrained nor paralysed by the obstacles that show up along the way. Our focus shifts beyond the immediacy of the present situation and searches for alternatives and new ways to deal with the problem or circumvent the obstacle. You can assess your heading and align your actions with your chosen destination, breaking free from the habit of always following the same pathway, regardless of where it might lead.

Because he Universe always rewards action.

And, in one simple sentence -

Action is the antidote to despair.

―Joan Baez
