Direct from the Traveller: Sarah’s Journey Through the Baltics

At entdecke.net, we believe that the best way to showcase the magic of our tours is through the eyes of those who’ve experienced them. This week, we’re sharing a delightful story from one of our travellers, Sarah Jenkins, an avid explorer from Portland, Oregon. Sarah recently joined a group tour created by entdecke.net. She visited Vilnius, Riga, and Tallinn, and she has graciously penned her journey to give you a taste of what awaits. Here’s her story:

Hi, everyone! My name is Sarah Jenkins, and I’ve always had a soft spot for history, cobblestone streets, and those little cultural quirks that make every place unique. When I saw the itinerary for this Baltics tour, it felt like the perfect match. Spoiler alert: it was even better than I imagined.

Day 1: A Warm Welcome to Vilnius

Stepping off the plane in Vilnius, I was greeted with a friendly smile and a sign with my group’s name. Our guide, Inga, made us feel at home right away. After a quick hotel check-in and a chance to freshen up, we were off to explore the city.

Vilnius is like a living postcard – a mix of Gothic, Baroque, and neoclassical styles that blend together so effortlessly. The Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was mesmerizing. I’m still thinking about the view from Gediminas Castle Tower. Watching the city stretch out beneath me, with its red-tiled rooftops and spires, felt almost dreamlike.

But the highlight of the day for me was the Gate of Dawn. I’d read about its miraculous painting of the Blessed Virgin Mary, but seeing it in person, surrounded by pilgrims, was something else entirely. The atmosphere was serene yet powerful. I couldn’t help but light a candle and take a moment of reflection.

Day 2: Castles and Fairytales

Trakai was like stepping into a fairytale. The wooden bridge leading to the island castle was magical, with Lake Galv? shimmering under the sunlight. Our group spent hours wandering through the castle, marvelling at the medieval furniture and costumes. I felt like I’d stepped back in time.

Later, we had some free time back in Vilnius. A few of us ventured to a local café recommended by Inga. The coffee was strong, the pastries were divine, and the company couldn’t have been better. It’s moments like these that make group tours so special – the camaraderie and shared experiences.

Day 3: Kernav?’s Ancient Secrets

Kernav? was a hidden gem. The archaeological site and its mounds were unlike anything I’d seen before. Climbing the paths felt like exploring nature’s labyrinth, and the views of the Neris River were breathtaking. The open-air museum was fascinating, too – it brought the medieval town to life in a way that textbooks never could.

Day 4: Hello, Riga!

Our journey to Riga was smooth and scenic, with plenty of time to chat with fellow travellers. Upon arrival, the city’s vibrancy immediately struck me. The mix of Gothic and Art Nouveau architecture was stunning, and I loved the quirky details, like the Cat House and its amusing backstory.

The Freedom Monument was another standout. Hearing our guide share its history – a symbol of Latvian unity and independence – made me appreciate the resilience of this region even more.

Day 5: A Day by the Sea

Jūrmala, Latvia’s “Northern Riviera,” was a refreshing change of pace. Walking along the beach, feeling the cool Baltic breeze, and dipping my toes into the sand was pure bliss. And that turtle statue? Of course, I rubbed it for good luck - who wouldn’t?

Day 6: The Charm of Kuldīga

Kuldīga was a surprise. Its old-world charm and the sound of Venta waterfall were unforgettable. The arched brick bridge was a picture-perfect spot for group photos. It’s the kind of place that makes you slow down and savor every moment.

Day 7-8: Tallinn’s Many Faces

Tallinn stole my heart. From the medieval streets of Toompea Hill to the artsy vibes of Kalamaja, every corner of the city had its own story. I spent hours marveling at the Gothic spires and medieval walls, but the Kadriorg Palace and its gardens were equally captivating.

Our guide made sure we didn’t miss a thing, even suggesting places to explore during our free time. The Lennusadam maritime museum was a personal favorite – high-tech and interactive, it was perfect for a history nerd like me.

Day 9: A Peaceful Farewell

Our last full day took us to the Estonian coast. The ruins of Pirita convent were hauntingly beautiful, and the Viimsi open-air museum gave us a glimpse into traditional coastal life. It was the perfect way to wind down after the excitement of the cities.

Day 10: Until Next Time

As I packed my bags and said goodbye to my new friends, I couldn’t help but feel grateful. This tour wasn’t just about the places we visited – it was about the stories, the laughter, and the memories we created together.

If you’ve ever dreamed of exploring the Baltics, do it.?
