Here is a job search idea that might be a useful addition to your armoury. You could write directly to potential employers, regardless of whether they are currently advertising for staff. You might select a number of organizations to write to, based on their location, their industry, the types of jobs you have seen them advertise or some other factor. It might sound counter-intuitive, but such letters can work if they are well thought through and constructed in the right way. Think of this as a small marketing campaign with some key elements. You need a number of target organizations (say more than 20) because of the low likelihood that any one organization will have a vacancy you when your letter arrives. If possible, your letter should be addressed in person to a Line Manager, as opposed to a Human Resource person. Such letters are always more effective if they go to management. Your letter should be addressed to a relatively Senior Manager who is able to influence hiring decisions. For example, if you are seeking a job in I.T., then the Head of I.T. is the person to write to. For smaller companies, you could write to the Managing Director. It is easier and less costly to send an email but sometimes harder to get email addresses. "Snail mail" or conventional letters in envelopes are a novelty these days and may gain better attention from recipients. Your letter needs to make it clear what you are seeking and point out the benefits you offer as a potential employee. Although you might be seeking a permanent position, it may be worth considering an approach that is centred around either contract work or permanent work. The reason for including contract work is that there are often more contracting opportunities than there are permanent positions. Around 10% of contracts turn into permanent positions so there is some leverage towards permanent work. Here is an example of such a letter that talks about both permanent and contract work. Along with this letter you might attach your whole resume or a one-page summary of your background.

Dear Mr Merriel,

?

Seeking a Contract or Permanent Assignment

…. where my unique Creative Experience

could enable me to make a contribution to your business.

?

With a recent restructure at Kryptonite Services, together with a number of people, I have left the organization after 5 years’ service. I am writing to you in my search for a Permanent (or Contract) position as I believe the skills and experience, I possess would have relevance to your organization in such areas as:

?

  • My speed and strength which would enable me to react to any problem situation very quickly with great force.
  • My capabilities in creative problem solving which would bring a new dimension to your marketing department.
  • I can provide examples of creative writing that have resulted in increased sales which would enable me to help your advertising department.
  • Finally, as I can fly faster than a speeding bullet, my domestic and international travel expenses would be at a minimum.

?

?

If you have either a current permanent vacancy, or projects where my skills could add value in the short term, I would be keen to meet with you to explore those opportunities.

?

I have enclosed a one-page resume and I would be happy to provide further details on request. Thank you for the time you have taken to read this letter. I appreciate your consideration.

?

Yours sincerely

?

The benefits of this kind of marketing campaign are that, aside from the initial preparation, it does not take a lot of time to write to a number of employers with essentially the same letter.

Writing letters to potential employers does not mean you cannot contact them later as part of a general Networking program.

That’s all for now? ….? Have a great week.??????????????????????????????????????????? Phillip Powell

Thanks Phil. Good advice, especially the bit about identifying the right addressee and as you and Leon Mann, point out, personalise the letter to show that you know a good bit about the person, the firm and its place in the industry.
