Think the safari life is only about lions, leopards, elephants, and rhinos? There are so many unique moments awaiting you on our endless savannahs, rolling hills, and delightfully rich forests.
One of our favorite African safari activities is the ultimate al fresco experience – dining out in the open air, maybe under a lovely acacia tree, or perhaps a romantic dinner for two under the stars.
Nothing enhances dining out more than a warm, gentle breeze and the sounds of Africa’s wildlife baying, chirping, or singing not far off. Sound like an inviting way to start your day or end it? Here’s how we like to dine out in the bush.
Breakfast
Reputed to be the most important meal of the day, you’ll be at one with nature when you step out from your lodge and enjoy a repast amongst the wildlife, which is also awakening and looking for their first nourishment.
Breakfast in the bush can be a simple affair of coffee, juice, and rolls, set out on the hood of your safari Jeep. With the fresh air and gentle morning light, we guarantee everything will taste better than some buffet spread indoors. ?
If you’re looking for more of a sumptuous outdoor feast, and love the smell of bacon in the morning, it’s not uncommon on safari to indulge in a full English breakfast in the field, complete with eggs, sausages, bacon, scones, fruit, pastries, and champagne.
Then, going whole hog, you can even arrange to have a private chef, cooking over an open fire and whipping up an unforgettable feast. So many ways to start your day in the nourishing fields of Africa.

Lunchtime
Sometimes the safari action is just too much fun to stop everything and head back for lunch. So why not do what the wildlife does and enjoy your lunch in the field?
Lunch can be an easy, casual meal perhaps under the shade of a pepper tree, with the wildlife in view. Your guide might spread out a blanket and you can relax, enjoying an assortment of meats, cheeses, breads, and salads.
You don’t want too much to weigh you down, but just enough to fortify for the coming afternoon’s game drives. ?Don’t forget – dinner is still on the horizon.
Dinner For Two…Or Twenty
One of the great things about dining in the bush is you can design your culinary experience. Looking for a small, candlelit dinner or do you want a more active meal with friends?
You can partake of an evening feast by a firelit boma near your tented camp or out in the field, or perhaps, supping by a moonlit river, with the sounds of the hippos nearby. We can help personalize this dining experience to your wishes.
As the light of the day fades to an orange glow, we can set up your table by a lake or on the savannah. Drinks are served, followed by an African-inspired dish or an open grill. There could be music or just the whispers of the natural world all about. All these choices are yours… to chew on.
As the fire crackles and the moon and stars shine upon this safari moment, you’ll savor this delicious meal amidst the most perfect setting that nature could possibly design. Join us!
