Tips for a Successful Meal Meeting

Tips for a Successful Meal Meeting

What’s happened to the way we meet and dine? Is it working, or are other influences hampering successful results when entertaining clients? Which of the following influences are you experiencing?

·?????? Multitasking has led to grab-and-go meals … does that mean grab-and-go decisions?

·?????? Formal dining has evolved from elegant table service to buffet-style food stations. On one occasion, I witnessed a tuxedo and formal gown-dressed couple in a food line at a charity function. That doesn’t make sense. Table service better matches the elegance of the apparel, atmosphere, and theme.

·?????? Spontaneous restaurant stops (no reservation) have created long wait times and a less desirable seating arrangement, which can increase frustration and irritability.

·?????? Television programming too often sends examples of the wrong table manners. For example: leaning on the forearm or eating off someone else's plate.

·?????? The popularity of fast food and takeout convenience has encouraged eating anywhere and anyway.

·?????? Eat and run does not require utensils, leading to confusion when faced with a formal dining setting and understanding how to use an array of utensils properly.

·?????? The breakfast bar has replaced the dining room table.

·?????? A lower tolerance for dining behavior has increased rude dining experiences.

The business casual trend has contributed to less formality in dress and behavior … and the list continues.? Is it time to teach or re-teach dining skills? What are your thoughts??

Have you ever been out to a meal with people who push their food with their thumb, smack their lips as they eat, spray food as they talk, stab and saw their meat, answer their cell phones, or text during a business discussion? And it does not matter what position they hold ― CEO, vice president, supervisor, or factory worker. Where did the manners go? For those in leadership roles and considered influencers, it is essential to be an example to follow because your tablemates are looking TO YOU for dining etiquette direction. Moreover, globalization and the Internet are bringing people together in unprecedented ways.

TIP: When the situation calls for an in-person meeting, a successful transaction demands an environment where communication is efficient, meaningful, and distraction-free. (This involves selecting the appropriate restaurant and table location as well.) Doing business over a meal has always and probably always will be the most popular form of building relationships, and it accompanies just about every event or meeting. It is the perfect opportunity to demonstrate your ability to socialize, demonstrate proper dining etiquette, and control your environment. Chapter 1 is your preparation guide.

Have you ever sat at a dining table and felt uncomfortable when you discovered everyone was eating differently than you? Whether you enjoy meals abroad, attend celebration events, or conduct business over a meal, it is essential to understand the variations in table service, place settings, and eating styles/utensil usage so you always know what to expect and how to adjust if different than expected.

TIP: Continental is the trend!? Yes, it can be complicated! Knowing what to expect from the service, how to read a table map (placement of plates, utensils, and glassware), and how to adjust is POWERFUL! Chapter 2 focuses primarily on the differences between American and Continental service (sometimes referred to as European) since they are the most commonplace.

Did you know you can have everything going for you and then draw the wrong kind of attention at a business meal by sending a message of disregard and cluelessness to your peers or clients with your lack of table manners? For example:

My boss snacks and eats at her desk, never eating in the employee lounge. She smacks terribly; you can hear her eating because she eats with her mouth open. Occasionally, she will step away from her desk, still chewing her food as she walks around the office. I can hear it and find it extremely distracting; consequently, I have difficulty concentrating on my work. —Vice President of a public relations firm.

Sound familiar? Unfortunately, tales like this one are all too familiar.

TIP: Whether the individual is president, CEO, or part of the support team does not matter. Bad table manners create distressing and inappropriate moments. When a client or colleague refuses your meal invitation, it is time to check your table mannerisms. They may be the cause of avoidance or a lost contract. What has been your experience? Chapter 3 will help you avoid awkward or challenging moments as you demonstrate impressive table manners. ?

Do you know how to work with the restaurant staff to ensure a successful meal meeting? This is something we too often take for granted. A restaurant that caters to a business clientele makes an extra effort to train its staff appropriately. You also have a responsibility to ensure a successful meal meeting experience. Knowing how to work with restaurant staff effectively is to your advantage. They are there to serve food and ensure all your dining needs are met and your meal is successful.

TIP: If you have never dined at a restaurant selected for a meal meeting, enjoy a meal beforehand. This allows you to ask questions regarding the menu options and familiarizes you with the atmosphere. It is essential if you or your guests have food sensitivities! You should also be familiar with the location and travel time. Introduce yourself to the restaurant host or manager and establish the name and face recognition so they can greet you by name. This will make an impressive statement for your client or prospective client. Chapter 4 will demonstrate how to work with the restaurant staff to enhance your meeting success.

How often does someone say to you, 'Let’s do lunch,' and nothing happens? Or are you occasionally guilty of the phrase? Socially, it might be expected, or it’s just a cursory phase that’s not taken seriously; however, in business, it’s all about the follow-through and does reflect on you.

TIP: In business, a lunch meeting transcends mere dining; it embodies opportunity and relationship building. It's not just about the meal. Whether sealing a crucial deal or nurturing a budding business connection, the business meal sets the stage for success. It's the prime opportunity to leave a lasting impression on a potential client or partner. Yet, it demands meticulous planning and an unwavering commitment to etiquette. Chapter 6 will take you from the business lunch and interview meal to the secret behind power dining.

"The quicker, the better" is the golden rule in quick-service restaurants, where customers prioritize efficiency to shorten wait times. Whether it's a casual grill, gourmet coffee shop, or fast-food joint, these venues offer a more relaxed and affordable dining experience.

TIP: Regardless of the venue, prioritize your client's comfort. If meeting over coffee in the morning or having a sandwich at noon, follow suit with your client's order—it's more enjoyable when both enjoy a coffee or sandwich. When someone orders nothing, it's important to remember that you're in a place of business. Whether you're the host or guest, never order anything! It's discourteous to the restaurant, as you're occupying a table without contributing to their business. Additionally, in fast-food settings, it's easy to be careless. Remember to dispose of your waste promptly. Others notice and appreciate the courtesy! Chapter 7 will take you from coffee cafes and food courts to buffets and formal banquets.

Do you understand the basics of wine, beer, and spirit selections? It can be powerful, even if you're not a regular consumer. It allows for thoughtful pairings with different cuisines, enhancing guest enjoyment and showcasing your consideration. Additionally, being aware of and respecting consumption limitations shows professionalism and courtesy.

TIP: It’s essential to be mindful of everyone’s alcohol and non-alcohol preferences. If you choose to abstain from alcohol or if you're hosting guests who do not drink, various alternatives can be just as enjoyable. Ordering non-alcoholic options in wine or cocktail glasses can help maintain the ambiance without pressuring anyone to drink. Respect their decisions and ensure they feel comfortable throughout the meal, especially during celebration toasts. Chapter 8 will raise your wine, beer, and spirit smarts.

Have you ever found yourself at an ethnic restaurant, struggling to decipher the menu? You're not alone. Trying to look savvy while ordering can be a challenge when the menu items seem like a foreign language. But fear not! Discovering global cuisines can be a delightful adventure, but navigating menus can sometimes feel like a linguistic puzzle. It’s a beautiful opportunity to explore diverse flavors and traditions. Plus, dining at ethnic restaurants locally will prepare you for the experience of traveling and dining globally.

TIP: Remember, authenticity varies, so empower yourself by seeking out restaurants owned and managed by individuals from the culture you're interested in. This will provide a more genuine experience and give you a sense of control over your culinary adventure. If it’s your first experience, consider inviting someone from that culture to dine with you. They can help you navigate the menu, understand the mix of flavors, and build menu confidence. Chapter 9 will help you overcome menu dilemmas.
