The Dimmer Switch Mentality

The Dimmer Switch Mentality

Found this super useful concept in Sahil Bloom's Curiosity chronicle.

Rather than On/Off switch mentality where we focus on just one area of our life and let the rest fall apart. Instead, we can try the Dimmer Switch Mentality.

We turn up the dial on one area (like work), but keep the others at a lower setting, still active but not demanding our full attention.

Here’s how you can use it practically in your daily life:

  • Work: Of course, this is where you’re turning the dial up. Dive deep, but don’t forget to schedule small breaks—grab a coffee, take a walk. You’re working smarter, not harder.
  • Relationships: Turn it down but don’t turn it off. Send a quick message to a friend or family member while you're on a break or during idle moments. A simple “hey, thinking of you” goes a long way.
  • Physical Health: You don’t need to run marathons! A quick 15-minute walk post-lunch, or 5 pushups and 5 squats first thing in the morning keeps you moving and energized.
  • Mental Health: A 2-minute journaling session or a quick breathing exercise (like the 1-1-1 method) helps keep your head clear without needing hours of meditation.

It’s about those small, easy actions that add up over time and stop the “I’ll do it later” mindset. The trick is not to wait for the perfect moment, just do something small—because anything above zero compounds.

So, if you’re focusing on work right now, let the other areas stay active with simple actions. Life’s a marathon, not a sprint—keep things in balance!

The satisfaction of doing HARD THINGS!

I’m all for slow living and taking breaks, but doing hard things has its own kind of reward.

For me, “hard” means waking up early for a walk, run, or some sunshine. Some mornings, it’s tough—I hit snooze more than once.

But when I push through and stick to my routine, I notice the difference. The days I start with exercise, breakfast, and a solid work session are my most productive and energetic.

Even on the hard days, when getting out of bed feels impossible, sticking to my plan pays off. It’s not just about the physical benefits—it’s the mental shift. When I do the hard stuff, I feel more positive, proactive, and ready to tackle anything.

It’s like the concept of delayed gratification—the tough moments now lead to a better, more energized mindset later. And that’s what keeps me going.

The hard stuff is hard, but the payoff is totally worth it.

TL;DR:

The Dimmer Switch Mentality Balance your life by turning up focus on one area (like work) while keeping others (like health or relationships) on low. Small actions in those areas prevent them from falling behind, helping you stay engaged without burnout.
