Dim Weights & Skate Dreams

Dim Weights & Skate Dreams

A few months ago, I received a call from my new friend, Mike.  His business was growing and their packaging needed some improvement.  All of the shipping carriers went to a “dimensional weighting” system to determine the price of a package.  These new changes meant that a package could weigh 3 pounds in actual weight but, using their dimensional weight formula, it would bill at 12 pounds.

Mike and I developed several goals.  He wanted to lower the overall cost of packaging, reduce the size of his packages thereby lowering the cost to ship the boxes, and improve the customer experience with the box (aka cooler design/graphics).  We made a few samples… revised them… revised them again… until we got a great package.  Then we had to get him to the right price.  We talked about usage and did our best to plan appropriately so that he didn’t have to take in 20,000 boxes at one time to get a great price.

A simple graphic was laid out on the box that screamed excellence and pure awesomeness.  With the graphics and the design this box was a force to be reckoned with.  To help speed the boxes through the shipping process, we added Better Packages e555 Water Activated Tape Machines.  Pratt Industries has a broad range of products and our Specialty Division, PrattPlus, helped supply them with the equipment and tape.

You may wonder what his customers think of the packaging.  Who really cares about a box, right?  Actually, many of them comment on the awesome packaging.  It's simple, classy, and protects the products well.  Put yourself in the place of that 13 year old kid that ordered a skateboard online... your new board comes in this box.  How do you respond?  This isn't just a box... it's a dream transporter... and it's amazing!
