THE DILEMMA OF NIGERIAN VEHICLE OWNERS - A MUST READ

For the record, as a car owner in Nigeria, you are a “big boy”, but off the record, there are some rough sides you can’t explain.?

According to data from the National Bureau of Statistics, in 2018, there were about? 11.8 million vehicles in Nigeria. Incredibly, 39% were privately owned, 56% were commercial vehicles, 1.1% owned by the government, and 0.4% by diplomats. Also, as we are pretty insufficient in production, most of these vehicles were imported, with 95% bought as used vehicles.?

With these stats, we can prove that almost every average car owner bought an imported used car. So, as a car owner, let me ask you what core specs you checked before buying your car? It’s not all about colour, shape, or brand.?

There are core parts that you should check before making a purchase, or else as your mileage increases, you begin to experience clutch issues, poor battery, electrical issues, brake problems and many more frustrating and constant repairs.??

So, for someone with little experience in dealing with cars, you must never attempt to buy a used car without a proper pre-purchase inspection. Even as an auto guru, you need a technical expert to check all the vehicle components before buying more than you can handle.

Well, this doesn’t completely rule out buying for the looks. After all, you need to buy something that suits your taste. Get the right colour, model, and, most importantly, something that suits your location - Nigeria.

Hardcore experiences in this country are not for humans alone. Cars have their share too. They struggle through bad roads, unprofessional technicians, bad fuel, substandard spare parts, and the ignorance of their owners. For individual car owners, it means repairs, total breakdown, and eventually getting an alternative means of transportation.

However, for businesses, these challenges affect the bottom line and make it difficult to satisfy the target audience. Finding an alternative for a broken-down truck full of valuable goods on the highway is never simple.

?Doubling down to car usage in Nigeria, there are laws to be adhered to; ? from purchase to ownership to usage. Many Nigerians are fond of cutting corners, which has huge repercussions on you, your vehicle,? and your business. . Some of these laws and regulations come with fines, vehicle impoundment or even jail time.?

It may seem easy to claim ignorance of the law, bribe the officials, or become adamant because of the current level of corruption in the country. It’s imperative that we know when we’ve or are about to cross the line. That's why you have to join us on this new episode of Mech Talks.

This will be a virtual round table discussion between the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIO), legal practitioners fully knowledgeable about the laws and regulations in the nation at the regional and national level and every car owner in Nigeria.

In this day and age, why would anyone walk up to a car lot and pay cash for a car that has no maintenance and repair contract arrangement on it, without first having a third party inspect it? Perhaps you do not want to pay an inspection fee, or perhaps you believe you have a good deal and do not require an inspection. Unexpected costs will be incurred if due diligence, such as inspection, is not performed. No wahala, we're here to do the job; the bigger the problem, the more money we'll make. This is a part of the dilemma. However, keep in mind that many of the vehicles on the dealer's lot are packaged.
