The Dilemma: Being Nominated for an Award or Being a Judge

I am heading to the Reuters Responsible Business Awards 2023 this evening (Responsible Business Awards 2023 (reutersevents.com), where BSI is shortlisted. If you are also heading in that direction, please take a moment and say hi; it would be great to hear your story and achievements in all that you are doing; it is so humbling to hear what every organisation is doing, the lessons learnt, and to celebrate together.

As I grabbed my mid-morning coffee, and as I have been a judge several times this year, I was reflecting on the two sides to any awards. The nomination and the judging. Each carries its own allure and unique set of experiences. While both positions offer their fair share of excitement and admiration, one can't help but wonder: which is truly better? Being in a reflective mood, I wanted to?explore the aspects of these two roles and the dilemma they pose, shedding light on the various perspectives that make this choice captivating.

The Thrill of Recognition as a Nominee:

Being nominated for an award is a thrilling experience that can fill one with pride and validation. When others recognize your talents, hard work, and dedication, it ignites a sense of accomplishment unlike anything else. The anticipation leading up to the announcement, the rush of emotions upon hearing the news, and the celebratory atmosphere create an enduring buzz that lingers. The nomination is not only a recognition of the ability of the organisation that you work for and the hard work of so many people but also an opportunity to connect with peers and enthusiasts who celebrate your achievements collectively, even if you do step on the stage, the simple act of being nominated is enough.

The Prestige and Responsibility of a Judge:

On the other side of the spectrum, being a judge carries a distinctive sense of prestige and responsibility. As a judge, you possess the authority to evaluate and determine the best among the best, rendering your opinion critical and influential. The opportunity to analyse and critique the work of highly talented individuals can be an intellectually stimulating experience. It allows judges to engage with diverse creative endeavours and witness the evolution of their respective industries firsthand. Being a judge also brings the satisfaction of contributing to the growth and recognition of talented individuals, thereby shaping the course of their careers. This sense of influence and the ability to make a difference is one of the most rewarding aspects of being a judge.

The Excitement of Competing or Observing:

The choice between being nominated for an award or being a judge boils down to the inherent excitement of either participating in the competition or observing it. As a nominee, you get to experience the anticipation, challenge, and personal growth that come with being in the running for a prestigious accolade. The thrill of competing with other talented individuals, pushing your boundaries, and triumphing over challenges can create lifelong memories and inspire future achievements. Conversely, as a judge, you have a front-row seat to witness the impressive work of others, gain exposure to innovative ideas, and be privy to emerging talent within your field. The excitement and exhilaration of watching exceptional individuals showcase their skills can be just as fulfilling.
