Digitization and Technology in Education in Spain and the Basque Country

Dear readers,

This is the sixteenth issue of a series of newsletters dedicated to exploring the challenges and opportunities related to childhood and adolescence in the Basque Country, Spain, and the world, based on the report by the Economic and Social Council (CES).

You can subscribe here to our digital newsletter, Basque Country Childhood Digital Newsletter, and also become part of our official community in Basque Country Childhood - Official Group.

As President of UNICEF Basque Country, it is an honor for me to lead this initiative, which represents a commitment to promoting children's rights and seeking collaboration with all public and private actors involved in the well-being of our children and adolescents.

Digitization and the use of technology in education have profoundly transformed how students access knowledge and engage with learning. In this issue, we will explore the opportunities that digitization offers to enhance learning, present success stories in the use of technology in the classroom, and analyze how access to technology in the education system has expanded in both the Basque Country and Spain. We will also include graphs illustrating the adoption of technology in classrooms.

Opportunities for Digitization to Improve Learning

Digitization has opened up a world of new opportunities to improve the learning experience for children and adolescents. The integration of technologies like computers, tablets, and digital whiteboards in the classroom enables a more interactive, flexible, and personalized education. Furthermore, digital education facilitates access to a wide range of educational resources and fosters autonomous learning and creativity.

Advantages of Technology in the Classroom

The use of technology in education offers several advantages that enhance the learning experience:

  • Access to Online Resources: Students can access a wide range of digital content, such as e-books, educational videos, and interactive simulations, enriching their learning experience and offering multiple ways to understand concepts.
  • Personalized Learning: Thanks to technology, students can progress at their own pace, adapting educational content to their individual needs and learning styles.
  • Collaboration and Communication: Digital tools promote collaboration among students, enabling them to work on team projects, share ideas, and communicate more smoothly.

Reducing Geographic Barriers

Digitization has also helped reduce geographic barriers by offering remote education, especially in rural areas or situations where physical access to schools may be limited. During the COVID-19 pandemic, distance education became an essential tool to ensure educational continuity. Although this transition was not without challenges, it also highlighted the potential of technology to transform the education system.

Success Stories in the Use of Technology in the Classroom

In recent years, several schools in the Basque Country and other regions of Spain have successfully adopted technology-based educational programs. These success stories have shown that, when properly implemented, technology can be a powerful tool to improve academic outcomes and motivate students.

  1. IkasTek Project in the Basque Country

The IkasTek Project is an innovative initiative implemented in several schools in the Basque Country that promotes the use of technological tools to enhance learning. This program integrates digital devices such as tablets and electronic whiteboards in the classroom, allowing students to access interactive resources and collaborate on projects.

  1. Methodology: The IkasTek Project focuses on project-based learning, where students use technology to research, solve problems, and create innovative solutions. This methodology not only fosters academic learning but also develops technological and creative skills.
  2. Use of Online Learning Platforms

During the pandemic, many schools in Spain and the Basque Country adopted online learning platforms to ensure educational continuity. Tools like Google Classroom, Moodle, and Microsoft Teams allowed students to continue accessing lessons, assignments, and educational resources from home.

  1. Positive Impact: The adoption of these platforms not only enabled students to keep learning remotely but also provided them with new digital skills that will be essential in their academic and professional futures.

Graph: Adoption of Educational Technologies in Spain and the Basque Country (2015-2023)

This graph reflects the growth in the use of advanced technologies in classrooms, with a significant increase in recent years. The Basque Country has led this advancement, with adoption rates above the national average.

Challenges of Digitization: The Digital Divide

Despite the opportunities that digitization offers, there are some challenges, especially concerning the digital divide. Not all students have the same access to technological devices and a reliable internet connection, which can create inequalities in access to effective digital education.

Measures to Reduce the Digital Divide

In the Basque Country, several measures have been taken to reduce the digital divide. The regional government has distributed electronic devices to students from low-income families and improved internet access in rural and vulnerable urban areas. Additionally, technology training has been offered to teachers to ensure they can make the most of digital tools in the classroom.

Impact of Technology on Education

The use of technology in education has a significant impact on academic performance and the development of digital skills. Below, we analyze some of the most important impacts:

  1. Improved Academic Performance

Various studies have shown that students who use technology in the classroom show improvements in their academic performance, especially in subjects like math, science, and reading. Digital tools allow for greater personalization of learning, helping students progress at their own pace and reinforce the concepts they need to work on the most.

  1. Development of Technological Skills

The use of technology in the classroom also allows students to develop essential technological skills for their future careers. These skills, which include handling electronic devices, navigating the internet, and using software applications, are increasingly important in today’s job market.

This graph shows how technology has improved students’ academic performance in international studies, with a sustained increase in recent years.

Testimonials on the Use of Technology in the Classroom

Below are some testimonials from teachers and students who have experienced the benefits of using technology in the classroom.

  • Testimonial 1: Ane, Primary School Teacher in Bilbao

"Since we started using tablets and digital whiteboards in our classes, I’ve seen how my students are more motivated to learn. They love participating in interactive activities and working on projects where they can creatively apply what they’ve learned."

  • Testimonial 2: I?aki, High School Student in Vitoria-Gasteiz

"Technology has made learning much more interesting. We use programs that help us better understand math and science, and we can also work on online projects with classmates. I feel more prepared for the future."

Conclusions

Digitization and the use of technology in education are transforming how children and adolescents learn, offering new opportunities to improve academic performance and develop crucial skills for the future. However, as the CES report points out, it is important to continue addressing the challenges related to the digital divide and ensure that all students have access to quality education, regardless of their economic situation or geographic location.

From UNICEF Basque Country, we will continue to support programs that promote equitable digitization in classrooms, ensuring that every student has the same opportunities to learn and grow in an inclusive digital environment.
