Digitalize to Decarbonize

Digitalize to Decarbonize

In this world of constant change, the one thing that people markedly felt more specially over the past months is the rising temperatures around the world.

We now know for a fact that increasing Green House Gas (GHG) emissions is associated with global warming.??Following the rule that only what is measurable is manageable, the world is now increasingly focussing on developing accurate calculation, measurement and reporting of GHG emission of different products, bodies, and processes.

With Carbon Dioxide contributing nearly 80% of total GHG emissions, focus is on accurate assessment of CO2 emission and routes to achieve Net Zero targets. And for organizations to thrive, key decisions around net zero targets need to be statistical, evidenced based and ultimately fully traceable.

Lummus Technology, utilizing the capabilities of its various business units, developed a solution under our Decarbonization Program to estimate and monitor the emissions from associated facility, process and technology in the refining and petrochemical industry. This allows our clients to estimate the equivalent CO2 emissions attributed to their facility at complex, unit or equipment level and perform detailed studies of alternative low-carbon or carbon capture technologies solution available.

Through a simple UI requiring limited amount of information from associated facilities, the solution applies best publicly available industry standard data to account for various emission factors. Main sources of emissions (Carbon Dioxide, Methane and Nitrous Oxide) are estimated for further assessment, reduction and capture purposes, based on various utility consumptions or direct emissions.

By applying approved/certified methodologies and factors for calculations, the solution enables to assess, quantify and track CO2 equivalent emissions categorized into direct emissions (Scope1) and indirect emissions (Scope 2) with detailed inventory of points and sources of emissions. CO2 credit for energy/utility export from the facility are also taken into account as applicable. The solution also extends to real time carbon footprint and emission monitoring, online analysis, and benchmarking against optimum or design or industry peers, with alerts for corrective advisory actions or services. Automatic Emissions reporting modules for internal stakeholders as well as external regulatory bodies are also part of the solution.

Through this quantification and measurement, efficiency improvements through optimal operating conditions can be drawn up, along with reduction via feed/utility/fuel substitution. The solution also permits the analysis of alternative feed stocks, utility conditions or fuel sources and composition and can be further utilized to conduct offline studies to recommend capital projects for carbon capture, oxygen enrichment, thermal integration schemes and equipment modernization.

We see many refiners and petrochemical operators committing to reducing their energy consumption and emissions but we believe a lot more has to be done if we want to achieve the Paris Agreement objectives.

Lummus with its broad portfolio covering refining and petrochemical technologies actively used in more than 2,400 units under licensing globally, is in unique position to support operators identify opportunities and develop best routed decarbonization solutions.

Do not hesitate to reach out to us for support on this pressing matter.
